The main problem with the current UI is that it scales badly with larger monitors, and that left-handed users find it awkward to play when the party frames are on the right side of the screen. That's why middle location would be the best solution for both.

When all else fails, make it user configurable. I hope that in later updates or sequel(s) to this game, features will be added, such as the ability to choose where the panel is located, what controls do, and any other matter of personal preference that allows the player to better enjoy the experience. Interface is always a matter of opinion, so choice can alleviate such concerns.
