It could be a set of narrow channels/chasms in one direction or another, then we can stitch together a winding row of chasms that fit together across the room, with end pieces near the walls

First of all, I just wanted to say that your tileset is looking absolutely awesome.
As for suggestions of variation - I like the idea that was mentioned above of a bit of vegetation. If you're thinking of building a mine-cart, then it might also be possible to have some form of floor decoration which you can manually place 'mine_cart_track'? :p

Chasms have the problem that they should work like pits I guess. Ceiling shafts are placed automatically, maybe you can replace them with proper 'chasm shafts' though to make it not look odd if you fall down and above is a regular shaft. For a full tileset of chasms I would need lots and lots of combinations as the floor textures only work in one direction (otherwise you get seams, no way to avoid that with a natural floor). But maybe I'll do at least a simple chasm set that only works in one direction.
I've decided for now I'll do the rail set, mine cart etc, the mushrooms (on the floor and some other types coming out of the planks, like the ones you can find on dead tree stumps), maybe the (simple) chasm set and some mining tools (pickaxe, shovel).
Did some more work on the rails, more or less done with it - you can build any track you want using the tileset. Still need the mining carts though. And I need to readjust the rocks on the floor so they don't clip with the rails.

A partially collapsed ceiling shaft (for light filtering through!) should look awesome and not be too hard to do, I reckon.
Also, for some reason the torch looks slightly out of place, fitting some sort of lanterns could work. This is a matter of personal taste of course.
Otherwise, a grand work! I eagerly await the end results!

This looks rely awesome!
Still I have to be picky
the metall in the rail is way to light, it should be darker, rails are iron colored not steel colored

I have an idea: with an alcove I can stuck gems or other object in the wall, and the player must use a pickaxe to retrieve them!
How does that sounds?

That sounds like an excellent idea!
(who knew even natural resources appear in alcoves!)
