I thought the fireball has to be a certain level.

i was curious and went to read the original post..
sadly i agree with some of his rant.. seems to me whoever developed some of the puzzles was using
a version of a ps2 controller.. the timed puzzles drive me nuts see my user name!.. on level 5 it took
me 3 hours to get that bloody sequence using a keyboard to just make it in the room.
Really took the joy out of playing at that point.. im on lev 6 now trying to get past the pits to get the
3rd key... been 2 days since i tried.. may just call it a day
i love the basic setup of the game i was a huge dungeon master fan and of course played all the wiz
titles.. i just cant handle the coordination required at the lower levels.. so good luck
but not for me

Level 13 in Fire, which is the minimum required to cast Fireball.

So for parties without a level 13 fire mage. I knew that the instant I read the sign.
I suppose would have got it if the sword was rechargeable (greed) or I had that mage, which I did not want. His point was without that stuff it is very cryptic and you are going to shoot some other spells and get frustrated, then save and try sword or read a walkthrough. If you do or are not greedy and or not thinking you need to save the sword for something else, it is easy. Maybe the sword could have been called "mage wrath" or something, lol.
anyway these are spoilers.

Well the rest of us got it, why should we dumb it down because <1% failed a cognitive bias test?

In an older thread I have started (
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1745&p=17134#p17134), I have stated that "Challenge was a key factor of old games". Challenging games needs challenging puzzles, and evidently challenging puzzles means that not every one could solve them. Grimrock is an old school game, and as an old school, it is imperative that puzzles should drive some people crazy. Those who cannot stand this, can always quit and play quest-based rpgs (like skyrim, dragon age, etc). They have no puzzle, require no much brains, and everybody can finish them.

I have no problems with this side of the game or understanding the old school drivel. It does not take much cognitive skill to work out I was just trying to explain how people can have trouble.
I cheated because I did not have the fire mage, and did not want to save or waste
unnecessarily, big deal. Total lack of understanding of statistics and cognitive logic to claim percentages, rofl.

Most of thetimes the challenge lies not only on finding out what to do (the solution) in a puzzle, but to be able to apply this solution. It is a matter of having a sufficient mixture of will power and dexterity, to speak in Grimrock's terminology!

If LoG is in any way difficult game or puzzles are hard, I must be really really oldschool. I didn't have any difficulty with any of the puzzles (except that first teleporter one in level 3
) and did not in any point have feeling that this game is difficult. I althought love dexterity games, my most played game recently before LoG was Edge
http://twotribes.com/message/edge/.
Now, go and play Might and Magic 1 or Nethack without spoilers

Allthough I've always been a horrible puzzle solver and a bad adventure games player, most Grimrock's puzzles didn't give me such a hard time.
Old school games may take days and months and years to finish. Getting stuck is expected by many. It's a different game design than what people are used to nowdays.
Grimrock is a hardcore gamer's game. Dragon Age, the Witcher, MMOs, most big new games, are pleasant-passtime games. Like watching a movie.
I'm not in favor of one over the other design of games but one shouldn't bite an apple expecting it to taste like an orange. Or even worse, like cheese.
