I demand a sacrafice

There's a closed gate with text on the wall that says "I demand a sacrafice", but I've cleared out the entire area and searched high and low, yet still can't figure out what to do next. How do I open that gate?

Place a piece of food inside the cage, a bunch of items will appear next to you.

Doesn't have to be food, can be anything. I placed one of the many spears i had in the trapdoor and that worked for me.

I used a loincloth, so yeah, pretty sure it can be anything.

I think this is bugged. I placed pitroot bread and spears and shields and some other things in that cage and nothing happened. Also on the same side of the cage as the writing.

Here's how to do it:
Face the cage, place any item inside the cage by choosing it from your inventory and clicking at the bottom of the screen. (This should place the item inside the cage).
Now move left 1 step and you will see a switch on the wall that opens the pit inside the cage. Your sacrifice will fall down and teleport back to where you are along with some additional gear.

I put a knife...anything will do. But you also have to push the button on the wall to offer the sacrifice..that is probably why some of you where not having success.
