Where's the mac version of LoG2?

Post by 2Four »

No new blog post in over two months (Last one was November 11th, 2014).
What's going on? Where the frakk is the Mac version of LoG2?
Please, PLEASE say it will come soon!

I'm currently working on it. No release date yet but hope to get it to beta in Feb.

Quick questions on the OpenGL Renderer port you're currently doing:
- IIRC it was mentioned in an interview that performance tuning could happen (due to CPU-build-in GPU's in Mac's) before doing the port. Has there been any?
- once the port is done, might the windows version get the option to choose between DX9 and OpenGL in an upcoming patch?

I hope so too. I would like to try both options.

Once the OpenGL port is fully working, I'll probably need to optimize it. At the moment it seems OpenGL is slower for some reason (need to investigate).

If there's a clear benefit of using OpenGL on Windows, it's possible that we'll patch it in for the Windows version.

I don't know if these are clear benefits but I'd personally appreciate rendering changes for a couple reasons:
- "spot" lights don't work correctly for me in Wine; ceiling lights clip strangely when the camera is near them (there's one on the square directly in front of the party in that screenshot), and eyctopodes' eye light produces a weird band about 3m in front of it. The rest of the game runs really well in Wine.
- the shadow banding in LoG1 is still present in LoG2, and in my opinion the game looks a lot better without it. It was present in the Windows version but not the Mac or Linux version. I don't know if it was done deliberately for performance* but I'd like the option to get rid of it (without turning shadows off completely).

*I had virtually identical performance between native Windows LoG1 and Linux LoG1, and that was with my old, crummy GPU.

Great to read that I will soon be able to mod and play Grimrock 2 dungeons natively on my MacBook Pro!

Some people across the forums can seem to get a bit impatient at times, but I just wanted to say - thank you for taking the time and effort to port to OpenGL / OSX. I know I would rather it was done properly (as I know it will be!) instead of rushed.

Thank You for your reply. I apologize if I came across as upset. But when there is no news for months at a time, it is understandable that some of us can get frustrated. I look forward to your updates via the twitter link.

Complaining after two months is impatient? I bet you can't stand waiting in the check-out line for more then 15 minutes. So please don't whine about others being impatient.

Becoming impatient would be stated as "I'm becoming impatient", rather than "where the frakk is my free stuff I want from you now". Stating "some of us can be impatient at times" is not whining, even if you are a Jr. High school girl. Thank you for imparting your friendly words of wisdom on us all, and all of your personal contributions to the community. I mean, they are too numerous to start listing. What was your name again? I'm sure I can find some effort you've put in to make this a better experience for all involved. Darn, can't seem to find it. All of the helpful tools and posts are by a guy named John Wordsworth? Hmm, never heard of him, sooo no need for mutual respect. :o

@2Four: Wow! Apologies for trying to be polite to the devs and showing them some appreciation to let them know that their efforts for making a mac port are appreciated. I'll just step aside and let you get back to being rude I guess. Have fun up there.

ps. I'm British - standing in a queue for 15 minutes is what I do for fun :p. As a side note, Mac is my primary platform too, so I am definitely eager for an OS X version!
