Do not throw anything that looks remotely unique away.

That's all I'm saying without spoiling it. It turns out I chucked something I thought was useless and now am searching the entire map for it. Not fun. And I do not want to use the console to retrieve it, as I'm not a fan of cheating.

To avoid this, be sure to save all items that are unique.

Stupid serpent staff.
Edit: Found it. I'd left it in the sewers. :?

I collect all my stuff and dump it in the hub just for such possibility.

Anytime I have to dump stuff while not at the hub I make a pile and mark it on my map.
It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

Hehe, I remember throwing that very same thing away too, but I dumped it right between a certain set of statues that fit to it thematically, so once I figure out why I need it, retrieving the item shouldn't be much of a problem.

( Reminds me of Lands of Lore 3... dumping "useless trash items that can be easily found scattered all over the place anyway if I ever really need one"... 10 hours later, in another dimension with no way back: "dammit!!!!!1111" )

With a game like this, setting up stashes is pretty much a standard technique. I used the fire shrine initially, then moved most of my stash to the lake (while operating around there) and the Hub (once it had enough access points to be convenient). Crates are too heavy to be worth lugging around normally, but they're great for keeping your stash organized.

Yea i had dropped the

summoning horn
on a switch because I figured it to be useless by then. Luckily I had the foresight to mark it.

I actually forgot about the mark and got a cold sweat when I found that place you know where. Then I found my map mark.

Yup, I dropped it too, I had to console it back in because I could not find it anywhere, in the entire world D:
