I didn't play grimrock 1. I have might and magic 4 somewhere in a box for the last 10 years but it always crashed so never really played it.
So what do I like about the game? I'll have to organize my thoughts a bit because I might otherwise just ramble.
1) RPG wise it's very solid. Just building a team can take hours because (on newb's glance) most traits, classes and races are rather well balanced. Levelling is swift but the choices you make are important.
2) I wouldn't believe it at first but grid based combat gives far more depth and flow. Less is more.
3) Secrets make me feel like owning my own treasure island. This is MY adventure, unlike, for example, Zelda or Fable, the lack of NPC's really makes it about me, myself and I. The island master addresses me personally at all times which sure feels like all this is for my pleasure. It is not implied to be a living, breathing world as the illusion wants in other games.
3.1) which for some reason makes this the most immerse game I've played in a very long time.
4)

the chest monster in the bog gave me nice scare. Fine use of the ordinary lean-in-chest mechanic coupled with the already tense gas clouds.. Such things are the hallmark of brilliant designers.
Thank you guys.
