The Truth about the FARMER class ?

Hi people,

I played LOG2 for about 8 hours now. My party is as follows :

Mino Barb / Lizard Rogue
Ratling Farmer / Insectoid Wizard

So far so good in term of balanced party. Except I don't see any special purpose on playing the farmer, except being a Farmer (and so a kind of "jack of all trades") and levelling faster than the other classes. I gave him Firearms (too new to not test it), Missile Weapons (DEX based) and Alchemy.

When I created my party, I spent some time hesitating with playing an Alchemist, because I liked the idea of "growing herbs in the inventory". Choosing a Farmer, I lost this "special class trait" making herbs grow.

When I red the Farmer description...

"As a farmer you do not command great powers and do not know how to wield a sword. Instead you are familiar with digging ditches for irrigation and the growth cycles of pitroot plants (wtf is a pitroot plant ??), basically everything a successfull adventurer would never need."

...I thought to myself : "cool, maybe in fact adventurers will REALLY NEED these irrigation skills !!".

Then I found a shovel and thought : "cool only my farmer can use it !" (I was wrong).
Then I started to think that I could dig some kind of irrigation lines from water spots, towards some herbs / flowers / trees for any result...

Now that I understand that the only benefit playing a farmer is to have him level faster than others, I really hesitate rerolling my whole party with an alchemist.

Or did I miss a real special FARMER class trait ?

Thanks for your lights.

BTW I realize that something made me probably wrong about the real power of a farmer. I played the VERY GOOD Etrian Odysseys games on Nintendo DS (If you dont know these games, love LOG, and have a DS / 3DS : go get it !)

The farmer class does exist in these games and is a very good "strange tools" class. You can see their role here : http://etrian.wikia.com/wiki/Farmer

I probably supposed Almost Human played Etrian too...

It's a class made to make the game more challenging if you pick it.

The nice thing about farmer is how fast you can level, there are a lot of respawning enemies that drop food plus catching fish is also great.

One thing that you definately should do is only wear you +25% xp necklace when you are eatting, then give the necklace to another character when you aren't eatting. Basically 2 characters are getting +25% xp and if you have two farmers and two necklaces then the whole party would get +25% xp, but then the farmers would be competing for food.

Farmer is a class with insanely fast progression, even more so if you pick a Human and go fishing (!)

He starts off really weak, but ends up the most powerful party member

How does that happen? You essentially start two levels behind, and while early on you can forge ahead, is a farmer really several levels ahead mid to late game? That seems unlikely to me.

It's very simple: while all other classes need to defeat monsters to advance the farmer just needs to eats and food can be found and farmed pretty much all over the island.

But they aren't even similar. Just because dungeons are navigated from the same point of view doesn't mean they're the same kind of game. They arne't even the same genre.

Etrian Odyssey is the same kind of game as Wizardry, Might & Magic, etc.

Whereas Legend of Grimrock is the same kind of game as Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, etc.

I like both, but they're completely different. Not even close to the same.

That doesn't explain how the farmer "ends up the most powerful party member" with normal play. Obviously if you don't progress normally and just sit around farming food, the farmer will be a much higher level, but then I could equally say the farmer is the weakest party member because I'm progressing through the game and fighting things instead of fishing.

Also, the XP to get more levels starts to increase dramatically later on. So it would look like the farmer would essentially need a few hundred thousand XP more to be several levels higher, and even that would only get you a couple extra skill points.

It is a much more grind friendly class to be honest.
So if you want to opt to run laps for gathering food you will gain more exp than if you did laps and just tried soaking the exp.
That is my feeling at this point about farmer.
It is intended to be challenging but also intended to give more control to us on how much we can progress if we have patience.
I am definitely intending to play a solo farmer. Of course I would like to see some exp modifications for bonus exp for solo and duo play.
