Dissapointing firearms?

Hi.

I am starting anew with a new party. I am swapping my human knight for a Minotaur barbarian and I am removing the firearms skill from my rattling alchemist. Too low damage output and you have to conserve ammo. What do you think? I got an archebus but I wasn't proficient enough to test it.

EDIT. To add insult to injury, firearms tend to jam easily. I haven't checked whether the alchemist can create pellets or not at higher levels.

The damage of the Arquebus is ok, similar to a rogue using the regular bow. After using Firearms during my entire Hard diff game i would not start using Firearms until i got this rifle. IMO the Flintlock is a waste of ammo; very low in damage similar to a rogue using a sling and due to low Firearm skill it also jams rather often. Better go with something else like Blowpipe and Darts on your Firearms guy until he has Firearms 3 and the Arquebus.

Hmmm. Thanks for the suggestion. I think I have made him start with light weapons. My rogue is the throwing/bows specialist.

Between Missile, Throwing and Firearms i opted for Missile on my rogue.

keep in mind that
- throwing is imba on high STR character (Mino)
- Missile very good on a DEX-based rogue as you get +1% crit chance per lvl
- If you go Firearms, just be patient with it. There is plentiful ammo believe me and you will get better gear. Alchemist reduces jam rate, if its still a problem guess you should max firearms to abolish the penalty (can be done by lvl 5 which is fairly fast)

Throwing is only imba if you don't manage to get your Missile user up to a similar level of Dexterity as the Strength on your thrower.
My Mino Barb Double Thrower (Str 49) is at best on par with my Lizard Rogue Missile user (Dex 50) due to the much higher "miss" rate.

The Mino Barb started with "Head Hunter", "Aggressive", "Throwing" and "Armor".

I am quite dissapointed with firearms as well. I have Repeater gun (19-57 dmg, shoot six bullets in a row) which in average could deal about 100 dmg. Thats fine BUT ammunition is limited so I cannot afford to use it all the time (with six bullets consuption on one attack it is really crazy). Thats why I started using missile weapons. When I look on my tank char, which is dealing with crit 300 dmg, firearm is pathetic. Also this alechmist bonus +50% for non-malfunction does not play sense, becasue with 5 skill points you have no malfunction at all, so why picking alchemist class. Bad pick I guess.
Btw cannon gun is also not so OP as I expected. You can miss very easily with that and ammo is very rare. I understand that dealing around 200 dmg with that is sometimes very nice, but still...

Thinking of firearms, I absolutely LOVED the Gadgeteer class in Wizardry series. You had a pellet gun with weak damage initially but it leveled alongside yourself, and could use different ammo later on (like shurikens or throwing knives instead of pellets) and inflict various conditions (10% Blind , 20% slow etc) :D :D

Sounds like you took optimal traits for throwing damage, maybe dump a few pts in Accuracy ?
