Certain lighting causes blackscreens

Post by Gamegeneral »

I have an Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT, and the game runs beautifully on it, save for instances where uncommon lighting is present.

For instance, I have issues with it blackscreening in a manner similar to a display driver crash at the Save Crystals, or when I placed a torch in a sconce in a pitch black room. It just revs up my fans and sends me to a black screen.

I updated my drivers, thinking they were the problem, but the issue persists.

Is anyone else having an issue like this? I would really like to progress further!

Update: After crawling around the forum a bit deeper, it seems that this might be related to GPU over-taxing. I'm going to try the most-suggested fix (Enabling V-Sync) and see how that works. I will report on results.

Update 2: Well, Vsync let it run longer, but I still had a blackscreen. This time it was near one of the blue, shimmery portals. Going to play with the settings one last time and hope it lets me run the game without issue. Otherwise I'll just have to wait for a patch, guys.

Update C: Lowering the settings seems to have alleviated enough stress to keep it from offing itself. Strange, though, because I can run much harder games on this system and they don't quit. I guess there must be a leak somewhere in the code.

I'm having the exact same problem. I too use the GeForce 9600GT and tried turning vsync on and disabling antialiasing.
Such a shame that it does this.

I think turning graphics down and Vsync on lets enough stress off of the GPU to keep it alive. Try playing with low shadows, low AA, and if you must, low textures. The game still looks remarkably well for low detail.

I would suggest to change a graphics driver ,maybe try using an "older" version - yes, older!

Setting it to low did, unfortunately, nothing to solve the issue.
In regards to the older graphicsdriver. How would i go about doing that?

Edit: I tried the theory with the lower settings again, but this time i had medium textures. Seems to be working alot better for some reason.

Usually it's as simple as uninstalling your current driver version (If your card auto-installs default drivers), and then going to their site and finding the correct version to download.

I'd double check, though, to make sure your card will still run fine after uninstalling its drivers. I know some older cards have a nasty habit of stopping when you uninstall them.
