Dungeon Assist

Post by ExpDevourer »

Hello, I am not really new to Legends of Grimrock, but I quit playing for awhile due to a major hiccup in my Module I was creating. I was trying to recreate/make a sequel to an old favorite of mine, I seen someone else who attempted the same thing in here, but it wasn't the same. Anywho, I'll cut right to the chase, I need help, bad, with getting the module to look and feel just right, I have all the maps drawn out, I have the ideas, the story everything. I just can't script to save my life, I tried to do it on my own, and now I can't even load up my dungeon anymore its soo messed up. So if anyone is willing to help, I'd greatly appreciate it, and once its done, rest assured you will get full credit for everything you helped with, I'm a story teller, not to adept at the whole encoding business. 8-)

The problem is that we all love to make up stories and imagine how it all should be, but we all think the coding is the hard part. I'm quite certain no one is going to do just the hard part for you, so the only chance of your project becoming reality is to learn and do it yourself.

you could pay me about 30$/hour and I'll code all day long for you :)

Honestly, many of the tricks you would be hoping to pull off have been scripted and posted here already. The difficulty would come in hunting it down (FAR less difficult than actually scripting it). Many of the users here likely remember many of the tricks that have come through (because well, we've USED 'em too!) so leave a post asking for help with a specific problem and you will usually get a prompt response of where to find the answers from one of the helpful people around here. Noone is likely to actually take and design your project, tho.
You must build it, run into a wall, ask for help, learn a lesson, and keep building. Eventually learning the nuances that have you feeling intimidated/discouraged by the scope of it all now. Unfortunately, this is the only way of creating a mod from your passion/vision. We can answer questions and point you in the right directions, but for the most part, we each have our own passions to create with blood sweat and tears, and are fortunate to find time to be helpful to each other on occasion.

So, take two: "I've started recreating "this game" and cant figure out how to make a teleporter silent. any help?"
You will get a much different response, and solutions to your problems. Hope this helps!

As Komag said, it's going to be hard to recruit someone to develop a mod for you, but my advice is to write a post describing your vision in a paragraph. Then state what you can do (like make the maps without scripts perhaps), what you want the other person to do and that you are happy for whoever helps to have creative input - so it becomes a joint mod instead of someone working for you.

That way you might find someone who likes your vision and is willing to work with you "50/50" on the idea.

In all honesty though, it's a tough sale as nearly all modders have more ideas than time. You are much more likely to finish your mod doing what msyblade said. Do your best and ask for help whenever you hit a wall. There are lots of us lurking here who are happy to answer lots of questions. Please just search the forums before asking questions - a lot of things have been answered already! :)

is there a place where there are some really simple CODING EXAMPLES to show novice coders step by step start off lines?

seeing a whole paragraph of coding just looks a maze

a "CODING FOR DUMMIES" tutorial would be great :D

Oh you misunderstand, I'm not looking for anyone to do all the work for me. Most of it is already done, its just a tangled mess, its like trying to get that stubborn knot out of a string of old Christmas lights. The thing works, its just tangled and extremely aggravating, I expected the sarcasm however. And on the pay scale I completely understand, but If I was able to do that, I would just start my own gaming company :P heh, it was yours and a few others tips that got me that far Komag, I have never scripted anything that complex since some old games I programmed on the Commodore, and I had a magazine that helped with that. Ahh well guess I'll just take a few thousand stabs at it, if nothing else I'll copy and paste what I have, and see if one of ya can spot where the error is. Basically all I was trying to do was individualize each floor to be slightly different, color, look wise, without it changing all the others. >,<

I think small modding groups could churn out some really great mods, where two competent modders really let their ideas blend well. and turn to the community when the buttons don't make anything happen.
