Thoughts on Spears and Protection

Post by Bridenal »

Quick thoughts on my playthrough:

1) Protection seems less useful as levels advance. I've been running some tests (I mean, I've started the game several times and have yet to finish it /o\ ), and so far Prot works well early on... But seems to not make much of a difference against tougher opponents. Around 30, I'm still taking like 45+ damage or more. On the other hand, Evasion may seem useless at the start but with a frontlining Rogue with high Ev and Unarmed... She has yet to die or find herself in dire straits.

2) Shouldn't the Undead spear wielders attack one square away from my front liners as well? A spear's reach allows back rowers in a group to attack from one row away, but I'm the only one who seems to factor this in. I can be right in front of them, letting them waste time on high Evade characters in the back; or keep one square away from them and let my frontliners spear the opposition. But shouldn't they benefit from the weapon's range as well, "retreating" one square so their attacks? Is this an oversight, or intended so as to not make them more challenging?

I just assumed that spears have "reach" so back row can reach opponents, but not enough reach for a whole additional square

Yeah, the spear works consistently for champions and monsters; monsters/champions can attack from the back row when wielding the spear.

Yes, I just thought that with two groups using spears, it was strange their frontliners wouldn't engage my frontliners from one square away like I do with them :)

I don't believe you can attack from a full extra square away. Perhaps they were just stepping into the adjacent square when your front line attacked, and you thought they were still far away when you hit

True, it might have been that.

See it as the spear striking 1 complete square length forward, while other weapons only strike half a square length. That means their back row can hit your front row, while their front row theoretically should be able to hit your back row. But no matter where you are in a square you can't hit entirely past the square in front of you.

But it doesn't make entirely sense either because technically that would mean that if your front or back row dies you'd be unattackable from most melee attacks from one direction.
