Grimrock

So... how do I make my mages do anything? Do they not start with any spells at all or what? And if not then how do I use them so they can actually get xp?

U can give them spear, rock, shuriken, until u get your first spell.

Or u can do like me in Grimrock (and in Dungeon Master) : try runes as long as u got mana and see what happens ^^

Else a quick research on : Grimrock Spell should do the trick

Yeah... so on level 3 now with still no spells... I have looked up the spells and they dont work without finding them first, and they cant hit with any kind of weapons at all, and my front line guys just died since I am basically playing with only 2 characters. Mages just dont seem to work out at all.

You absolutely positively do not have to find any spell scrolls in order to use a spell.

The only reason a spell does not work is if you haven't trained to the necessary skill level for a specific spell:
The first spell in air(shock) requires 4 skill points in the air tree.
The first spell in earth(poison cloud) requires 3 skill points in the earth tree.
The first spell in fire(fireburst) requires 2 skill points in the fire tree.
The first spell in ice(ice shards) requires 3 skill points in the ice tree.

1) As posted above, you do not need to have found the spell to cast it.

2) Even so, you should have found all of the first tier spells by third level. You've definitely missed a bunch of stuff.

I think it's clear that you're doing something wrong, most likely you're not putting skill points into casting skills.

they may not work because you need a desired level in a certain skill,if you need 13 firemagic for a spell and you only have 10 it wont work,it says the skill level you need in the scroll.
saying that its possible to level to 22 fire pretty early and you become pretty hard for a good 6 levels after that.

Finally figured it out, I did not know to right click on the mana symbol to activate the spells. Wow... so you have to reset the runes every time you cast a spell? That is stupid, how are you supposed to do spells quickly? Is there a way to just keep the same spell prepared at all times?

No it's designed that way to be similar to Dungeon Master which this game is a homage to.

You aren't. Spells are powerful attacks that can damage multiple enemies, they are supposed to take a little time to prepare. That's why you usually don't see wizards fire bolts from both hands at machinegun speed like Son Goku. They have to chant a spell or channel mana... or draw runes.

You can, however, prepare the runes and then instantly fire them once you need the spell.

Now I demand a Monk class that can shoot chi balls. Maybe they can only hit one thing at a time like arrows.

Of course, Unarmed doesn't even have a Flurry of Blows ability. Sigh...
