[SPOILERS] Why I am not buying this game

I make it a case to pirate games. I play through them fully. If i enjoyed myself after the game I'll buy a new copy.
This allows me to give all games an equal chance even if I am skeptical about them.
Grimrock was one of those games I was skeptical about but I gave it an attempt.

I really enjoyed the game but the 4 item puzzle on floor 9 ruined it for me.

The developer had to know that not all parties would have an archer to provide arrows
I stopped collecting rocks at like level 3
My minitaur didn't have the skull collecting feat so I never bothered to pick the things up.

It would probably take me 2 hours to run around empty floors looking for these items.
I know you're trying to make the puzzles difficult but theres a difference between difficult and just tedious and time consuming. The other puzzles were nice this one made me stop playing.

There are many ways you could have done it better.

-You could have added a counsel command that let players drop items into their bag (games much older and more difficult than grimrock let you do this.)
-You could have made there be more than one solution to the puzzles (an axe is beats bane and does indeed have a steel head, any of the random alchemy plants could be considered tears of the earth, any chunk of monster could be considered a severed dead)
-You could have made this one of the optional puzzles.
-You could have required that the player only need some of the items to solve the puzzle (like you only need to fill 2 pedastals instead of all 4)

Good game I had fun until the this part but this is unacceptably bad. I'm not gonna buy a retail copy or recommend it to my friends.

Sorry to hear you didn't end up buying the game, $15 for the 9 levels worth of fun you had isn't really a bad deal.

Personally I didn't get stuck where you did as I'm a hoarder so I had all those items. Besides I wouldn't have minded a little back tracking to be honest. It's worth it to experience the rest of the game.

I actually like my puzzles to be a challenge if each riddle had several possibilities it would have been a bit easy. :)

Daniel.

Given the high volume of junk released these days I don't blame you... but...

If you think one puzzle you didn't like is enough to justify not buying the game, then I'm guessing that you haven't actually bought any games and you just lie to yourself that you would buy a game if it was perfect. Seems a pretty weak excuse for not supporting a small independent developer, especially given the very reasonable price of this game.

So I'm curious, which games did you decide were perfect enough to pay for?

I won't get into whether you should pirate or not for the purpose of trying out a game. Rather, I think you should think about what obligations you owe to yourself and a dev if you decide to play through it fully. If you try it out for a time and find that it sucks, fine, move on. Time is too precious to waste on bad games; no need to even talk about money. If a game was worth you spending the full amount on it, that deserves compensation.

I'm assuming you're young. My time is worth more than my money.

Exactly. You didn't like this game because of one puzzle? Guess what, no one likes that puzzle, but it doesn't stop everyone else from recognizing Grimrock for the excellent game that it is. You're just looking for an excuse to justify pirating the game without feeling like a thief for taking advantage of a small independent company. Way to stick it to the man I guess.

Even though I was shy one item for that puzzle, and I had no idea where to find one, and it took me time and backtracking, and I found this puzzle annoying - I don't feel that one tedious puzzle undoes the other 99% of awesome gameplay. My personal opinion is that puzzles should have the required items somewhere nearby, although LoG has optional puzzles that reward hoarding or careful note taking (for example, if you leave stashes of unneeded objects in specific locations and mark these on your map). Another strategy is to leave items at stairways before going down each level.

In any case, can at least understand arguments from those that refuse to pay for games that are $60, are broken, or have intrusive DRM, but LoG has none of these problems. The pricing is more than fair, and there is every likelihood of many developer and user created dungeon expansions to give more entertainment for every dollar.

Use that two hours of backtracking to find some secrets, build up your characters with some respawning monster kills, and return to the puzzle stronger than before. Then, please pay for the game. It is important to consider that independent developers won't make more dungeon crawlers or other games we want to play, if they aren't supported.

Cheers

not looking for an excuse. ive deleted my pirated version so I cant even access that

whether or not I buy a game is decided by whether or not I had fun. its about me personally
i play it, decide if i personally enjoy it, and that is the only basis for my judgment
you play it, decide if you personally enjoy it, and thats your judgment

i'd like to see the company try again and I'm leaving them feedback.

as for actually paying money. my favorite game this generation was hardcorps uprising. i bought 2 copies of it.
its a completely different genre but you asked if i ever spent money

Quite a douchebag move, OP. Coming here, announcing that you've pirated a game, rubbed some salt into that gash and then announced that the devs "could have done it better".

Really? Really?!?

The "complex" puzzles you refer to are actually clever devices geared at keeping Ritalin kids and WoW players out of here. That being said, don't let the door hit your pussy on the way out. -->
