Which way is North?

Generally when looking at a map, one assumes that the top of the map is north. But the in-game compass seems to be in direct conflict with this, which makes puzzles that have hints involving the cardinal directions confusing. So I guess my question is, "Is the top of the auto map south?"

how far are you in the game?

on 2nd level I believe, you should find a compass, lying on the ground on your first encounter with those mob that spits poison bolt. Red arrow of the compass always points north

I have to say I'm extremely embarrassed. I do have the compass, and now that I've used the map to confirm that it does point north, I can't imagine why I was ever confused in the first place. Thank you all for telling me though, sorry to ask such a stupid question.
