I've installed this game on two different computers, multiple times each. This error is all that I've ever been able to get. I know Grimrock is supposed to be old school, but unintelligible errors that prevent one from ever playing is a little too authentically nineties for my liking.

Probably caused by a conflict between 32-bit and 64-bit dlls on your system. Could you try installing this from Microsoft:

btw. where did you buy the game from, gog, steam or humble store?

I bought it via GoG.
The x86 installer won't let me install; it claims that I already have a newer version on my system.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit and had the same problem.
I resolved it by installing the VS 2010 C++ SP1 64 bit runtime and then Direct X.
VS 2010 C++ SP1 install link:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/de ... x?id=13523
Direct X install:

Perhaps you already solved the problem but just in case:
Win7 64 bit is DirectX 11 compatible BUT it doesn't mean that it has all the updated DirectX 9 files in it.
in order to update the file, when necessary, just download and run the setup file of the Direct X redistributable. Get them from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/de ... px?id=8109
Dowload them inside a temp folder and run the setup file. It will update the files if necessary. After that you can delete the temp folder.
Run the game
