Whats you favourite grid based Dungeon Crawler

Post by cryocore »

From my Avatar you can probably guess mine.

I see that Eye of the Beholder and Dungeon Master are noted as the inspiration for Grimrock, but for me it seem much more like a Lands of Lore inspired which is perfect in my mind. I am a devoted old school RPGer and games like this (and Wasteland 2 and Banner Saga) make me very happy indeed.

So what your fave old school grid dungeon crawler. Lands of Lore is king in my book, but EOB 1 and 2 are also great.

Heres my classic old school/big box + other RPG shelf. I do have a habit of posting this pic whenever I can.

As you can see no Dungeon Master, but I do own Stonekeep on GOG (lost that box years ago).

Daaaamn. That collection is freakin' righteous.

For me- I never really played grid-based crawlers, unless you count Roguelikes.

I really like Adom, Nethack, Stonesoup, and DoomRL!

Nice! I would be tempted to put Icewind Dale next to Baldur's gate. ;)

Personally all my games are in a big pile on my bookshelves!

I would but there is a slight issue with that. As much as I love the old Big Box games and the epic manuals they were inconsistent with their sizing. BG1 and TotSC are larger than the rest and dont stack well. It hard to find boxes the same height so I can double layer them.

On a side note if Grimrock went the way of Wasteland 2 and Double Fine Adventure and release an Old School Big Box with large manual I would totally buy that bad boy.

I'd say it would be a waste of their resources, but if you want to organize such, just put a business case together and contact them about it. Who knows?

Yeah I love it. Replayed it about six months ago. I used to DosBox it but now SCUMMVM supports it and it just works so perfectly.
