EOB1 comparisons.

Having only played EOB1 and a bit of 2 back in the day I don't have any of the other old school dungeon crawlers to compare.
However, this game bears a stark resemblance to much of EOB1. The first enemies you encounter are Giant Snails. In EOB1 is was Giant Leeches. They're both gigantic versions of bottom feeding slugs. See what they did there? Very clever mister game devs.
Also some of the wall textures seem to have nearly identical brick patters, and the secret buttons are in the exact same locations as the EOB1's and the exact same shape!
The inventory screen for your characters is pretty close too, and though it can be argued that would be the case for many RPG inventory/equipment screens I think this one too is a throwback to good old EOB1.
Anyone else notice anything that's less of an inspiration and more of a stolen page? (In a good way of course. I'm not trying to accuse the devs of being unoriginal. I think they were trying to recreate pieces of these classics with such similarities to give us that nostalgic...appreciation...or whatever.)

Well, its been many years and I just actually checked out a video of EOB1. Turns out my memory isn't all that great and the brick patters is definitely not the same. Possibly not the button placement either ahah.

As a MASSIVE eye fan (played Eye1/2 out so many times it can't be counted multiple people's hands
) .. most recenlty was a week or 2 ago... anyway your points:
A. Bit of a leap to compare snails to leeches.. but ok, yes.. Eye1 had leeches (not that many however, the real enemy of level1 were the kobolds) and LoG has snails
B. No... the paterns aren't the same... discounting the fact the textures are just flat in Eye, the rock patern is still not the same, just to be sure I had a quick look at the sewer, dwarven and drow texture (which is just dwarven recolored) and this I don't agree with. The only thing going for it as that both LoG and Eye midgame textures were whitish bricks.. though those in Eye were a lot more "natural rock based" and less "crafted".. you probably get close with the Temple/Tower textures of Eye2. Those compare a litle bit to the midgame ones from LoG.
C. The secret buttons do NOT look the same... the secret button in the sewer levels were mostly little circels, the ones in the dwarven levels come closest but even then, the dwarven levels had a pointing out rock formation to click on, while in LoG it's more of a flat level push in block for the earlier levels.
D. Hmm the inventory screen has indeed been a staple of the genre... I mean if you look it that wat then games like Diablo and Dungeon Siege fit that same catagory... and so do many RPG games that have your "outfit character" above and your "inventory" below... the only plus point on this one is that eye did have a lower right button to go to your "stats" tab and LoG also has a "stats tab".. ofc again, so do many other similar single player rpg's.
To be a real good Eye knockoff it needed illusionary walls, pits that just drop you to the next level with no immidiate way back and more spinners and "hidden teleports" (does the game actually have any totally hidden teleports ?)

Inventory too. Not quite as similar after all. Maybe I shoulda checked back first. I guess this game just reignited my passion so fiercely I lost sense of reality xD

Hey DJK. You're right! I was way off base haha. I think my snail to leech comparison is the only valid one. welp, i'm an idiot. xD

I'm almost convinced there's one button that's very similar, but can't for the life of me remember which EOTB it's in, or which level it's on
So I could be just making it up
lol
Also, illusionary walls - definitely don't like!
Unless of course, there's a riddle or puzzle that identifies them. I dislike them because, without some reason to search them out, they're a faulty game mechanic - because you either discover them only when you accidentally walk too far, or you have to constantly bump every wall just in case you can walk through it. Nasty

Think Eye did illusionary walls pretty well... yes there were some that youd only find if you looked at the clue book or checked every wall... but none of em were essential to getting forward and if it was it usually hinted at it.. or it was obvious.. I mean if you have a linear path that just "dead ends" ackwardly youd check it out

The dungeon dressing is VERY like dungeon master's, with the various kinds of hooks and chains. Pretty sure those are nearly identical except 3D and higher res.

All of the Illusionary walls in EOB had a rune on them indicating that there was something special about the wall.
It was EOB 1 that had a small wall button that is very similar to LOG.
Trust me, I’ve played and gone through that game more than most people have. I made a Mod for it in NWN 1 that is an almost copy of the game but in a different view and play.

Dungeon Master begat EOB and all which followed... so the comparison of LOG to EOB is arguably meaningless. For the record.
