lvl 7 - hall of fire pit

Ive just about completed level 7, but just before entering the Hall of Fire there is a pit, (with a sign saying Mages Entrance).
Opposite this pit is a pressure pad, and I decided to throw a few things over onto the pressure pad to see if it did anything
in my infinite wisdom I didn't throw rocks though. I threw valuable empty potion bottles and even 2 good weapons.
I cant find anyway to get across the pit to pick up my goodies again
Are they now lost? The only way it could be worse is if Id thrown a key over there

You need to shoot a fireball across or use the fire sword in the gate you are standing next to

Thanks, I got my precious vials and cutlass back
I really should have figured out that Mages Entrance meant cast a spell at the gargoyle. But I thought that sign was referring to the iron gate next to it. Silly me

I'm having problems with the Mages Entrance too
I used up all my Firesword bolts on the Ogre and I don't
have the skill to conjure a fireball spell, i've tried poison bolt
and anything else i could throw at it but no luck.

If you've used up the charges in your sword, you'll need either the skill for Firebolt or another sword

Ok managed to get around the problem.
I had no firebolts left in the Fireblade
And was a long way from getting the Firebolt Skill.
So loaded an earlier game and in the Treasure Store
I used the 1 gold key i had on the cell with the Tome of Fire
Used it and it upped my Fire skills to be able to cast a firebolt
