Level 6 - Halls of Fire, Fire Knights

This is a question regarding the respawning knights with the 'column click' puzzle.
I've searched the forum for an answer, but it seems I may have just missed something obvious, since I don't see anyone else having a problem. It's the pits. The pits are all open. I have no idea how to close the pits to start clicking on the buttons on the column. Help!

The start button is on a wall in the souteast part of the room.

it would be nice if you could just get in there for a few minutes without the knights respawning every 5 seconds - it's just a joke and kills the game

No way those guys are awesome as they are 500xp and an easy kill if you made good decisions making/leveling up your guys (and found some good weapons/armor).
Six snails are worth just a little more than one knight but after I cleared the snails the first time they never all respawned again :/. Those knights however just keep coming back for more!
