I went with a totally stock party - I just wanted to get stuck in! Perhaps I would have changed my ranger for another wizard, and if it weren't for the pike (or later on the ability to attack with any melee weapon from the back row) I would have found the ranger slightly quite redundant in close-quarters battle

First time thru I decided on a well balanced, typical, tiny-bit-boring party of H/F, M/F, L/R, and I/M. It was fun, played thru normal with Prisoners 1-4...now, it's time for the good stuff...
Gana do it again and do "mission reports" on my facebook for me and my nerdy friends, and a party full of "characters." It's gana be awesome. Just about to start in fact. Here is the motley band of miscreants and ne'er-do-wells...
Dayven Drake, self proclaimed Lord of the Pit: Dayven was the king of a local, very small-time, illegal amateur pit fighting ring. He prefers to beat people over the head with his fists than any weapon, although up until recently, his biggest competitor was the town drunk. However, the King's recent crack down on illegal fighting rings got Dayven into a wee bit of "Throw-You-Into-Mount-Grimrock" style trouble. Outspoken, bouisterous, and convinced he is the most attractive thing on the planet, Drake is sure to try to lead everyone down a very deep, dark hole... (Human Fighter, unarmed lots, athletics a little; fist fighter, evasive, because drunk people are hard to dodge)
Percy Juniper (P.J.) Hammerstern: Percy, or P.J. as he prefers is the third son of the noble Reginald Winstone Hammerstern the 3rd, Lord Earl of a fairly large and prosperous farming community about 3 days ride from Nothampton. P.J. always resented both his father and his two older brothers. He was expected to join the priesthood at a young age, but, being the youngest of his siblings, his mother would not allow it. As Minotaur noblemen were rare, and the Hammerstern line long and prestigious, Lord Earl Reginald tried to find other ways to make his third son useful to him. This however just kept pushing young Percy further and further away from his family. When he turned 14, he left home one evening and never returned. Life on the streets was hard for the young Nobletaur, but the large sack of coins he had stolen from his father before he left severed him well. And when those finally ran out (after two weeks of extravagant living), he decided to find a job to earn more money to support him in the lifestyle he was accustomed to. And about 1 hour into his new life as a metal worker, he decided that working for a living was a whole lot more work than stealing for a living...And so he set off on a wild life of crime that lasted all of 3 months. You see, Minotaur's aren't known for their nimble fingers or their powers to disappear in a crowd after cutting someone's purse. And so, here P.J. finds himself, tied to a bunch of commoner's about to be thrown down a deep dark hole. Maybe he should have just become a priest after all... (Minotaur rogue, missile weapons lots, dodge a little; healthy and skilled, from his education)
Sill, Knight Squire to the Noble P.J. Hammerstern: Sill, who's real name is unpronounceable in the human tongue, is a lizardman hailing from far, far away. He had always heard tales of the brave knights rescuing fair maidens and slaying foul beasts to earn the admiration of the people, the respect of kings, and the glory known only to the special few called "Heroes." Unfortunately for Sill, his tribe of lizardmen was a bunch of no-good sneak-thieves who preyed off the livelihoods of others. Raiding and plundering was the name of the game, swoop in quick, take whatever wasn't nailed down, and get out. Sill did not approve. So as soon as he was able, he set out on his own to find a way to become a knight like in the stories. Sill knew, of course, that he would have to start out as the squire of a knight. No one just became a knight over night, that was just silly. So he set out in search of someone to train him in the ways of a strange ritual he had only heard the other lizardmen call "boot-licking." He was fairly unfamiliar with the term "boot," but he loved to lick things, so he figured he would be exceptionally good at it. Upon entering civilized society, he was promptly arrested, as his tribes warpaint (which would just not come off no matter how hard Sill rubbed) was almost immediately recognized. Luckily for Sill, his tale does not end here, because in jail, awaiting execution, he met the Noble, the Honorable, the Courageous Sir P.J. Hammerstern, a Minotaur of apparently noble birth and extreme bravery. You seem, Sir P.J. had informed SIll of an epic quest he would soon be under taking, and wondered if Sill would like to come along. Sill leapt a the opportunity to serve such a wonderful knight as Sir P.J. and immediately agreed, and so, the next day, when the guards were escorting Sir P.J. to the sight of his next daring adventure aboard Sir P.J.'s very own private airship, Sill followed behind, like a good squire...until Sir P.J. told him to stand up front and catch in sharp/blunt/fast moving things headed for the brave knight. Sill was more than happy to oblige... (Lizardman warrior, lots armoring, some sword; Poison Reistant and Cold Blooded cause he is a reptile)
Bob: None of the other three prisoners knew anything about Bob. In fact, they were all pretty sure that Bob wasn't his real name, as they had made it up so that they would have something to call him. He didn't seem to speak the same language as the rest of the prisoners and no one had ever seen anyone that looked anything like him before. They weren't even sure if Bob was a "him." What they did know what that loud noises, strange smells, or excessive wind all made Bob get really twitchy and shoot lightning from his hands and spit globs of acid from his two gigantic pincers that sit near his mouth. He almost burned a hole thru the hull of the airship before it even got underway. After that little incident, he was gagged, blindfolded, and all 6 of his arms/legs were tied securely to part of the ships railing. He stayed like that until moments before the whole party went tumbling into the pit... (Insectoid mage, heavy air, some spellcraft, some earth; Aura and Natural Armor cause he is a bug).
Will this band of total strangers and less-than-experienced adventurers survive hard mode in the Legend of Grimrock? Only time will tell.

Human Warrior/Sword & Board
Minotaur Warrior/Mace
Lizardman Rogue/Bow & Spear
Insectoid Mage/Fire, Air & Earth
Nothing unique I guess, but it works!

I am on my fourth restart after not liking the previous parties. I am now going with
Lizard Fighter - Sword and Board
Bug Rogue - Evasion/Dual wield daggers
Mino Rogue - Bow
Human Mage - Ice and whatever else I decide

I didn't think dual wielding worked? Question to dagger rogues; what use are you to the party before assassination 12? spears and throwing weapons until then? Because dags in the back row don't do anything till ass12 or am i missing something? Are people putting dagger rogues in the front row trusting to their evasion?

Human/Fighter (swords)
Lizardman/Fighter (maces)
Minotaur/Rogue (assassin/dagger)
Insectoid/Mage (balanced)
Tried a few builds out but so far this seems to be the best I have got

I used shuriken and spear on my minotaur rogue until he got assassin 12 and then switched him to dagger and shuriken/bombs. I also used head hunter and skilled so that he got assassin 12 at level 3. Given that melee rogues do stat quite differently to ranged rogues (melee being DEX then STR, ranged being STR then VIT), Minotaur might not be the best choice for assassin/dagger given the low dex but I wanted to make a party with one of every race for my first full playthrough.
Also no, dual wielding doesn't work.

It might not work, but my bug is holding two daggers all the same
