I did that got on the middle tile with the fire deflector - all that seems to have happened is a wall opening to a secret. Looked everywhere else on this level and it's all the same as before

There are 2 things at that spot.
Now do the same thing, but look the other side...

Well, I think I've done everything on level8
got the round key and teleported back to start. There is a receptor with only a lamp opposite in the room that you're transported back into. I assume you have to redirect the fireball to it but you don't have time to get into position. Any help here please?

That's precisely what you need to do.
This is the first room you visited when you arrived at this floor with the Overseer. The fireball enters a receptor that spawns another fireball. The second fireball you CAN catch and redirect.
- Press button to spawn fireball
- Press [back], [back], [back], [strafe right]
- Wait for impact
- Press [forward] and [left]
- Wait for fireball to hit

Brilliant.
You continue to amaze me with how Grimrock can be twisted with some clever scripting. So we pretty much lose the fighting and critical timing aspects and gain "conversations", a more elaborate story and especially the magic wand puzzles in return. The interesting question is whether a mod could actually incorporate
all of those elements and not feel overburdened...
As it is, the mod has one glaring weakness:
It's too short
To be exact - 6:13:22 hours, only 79 secrets (but including the smiley and the disco) - on the other hand, I didn't need any help. I can do this kind of puzzles better than the timing puzzles anyway...

Admittedly I had a bit of help towards the end but I eventually finished it in 5h21m with 64/102 secrets.
What an amazing mod. It was a completely different experience to play a puzzle heavy mod. I loved it and I'm currently playing it a second time to see if I can find more secrets. Well done Mahric.

BTW,I'm stuck at the 8 alcove puzzle,level 9.
My guess is
quarrel="i never argue"
Gear neckless=repeating itself
Doublet=not be the latest fashion
topaz and ruby=piece of jewely
compass=show you the way
skull=Life left me long ago
dragon=fire to make an image
Book=loose your head
....not work.
I spend here 11 days in.
