I didn't like it. All dungeons were randomly generated, which is ok for Rogue like, but doesn't really work for DM like games. No puzzles, no atmosphere, just killing enemies.
Well, the generator in Dungeon Hack actually creates some (pretty simple) puzzles. Very cool and replayable game.

That's interesting. What kind of puzzles?

Nothing complicated (don't know if you'd even consider them puzzles): Some key-door-problems here and there, some hidden switches, some illusionary walls. But in the random dungeon environment (with a ton of different wall styles by the way) it was quite interesting for many playthroughs. I remember a bug due to the memory restrictions at the time. When you generated a dungeon with maximum levels (you were able to customize almost every aspect of the generation) the game wasn't able to create keys (or any items) on the deepest ones anymore, if there were many key-door-puzzles before. Guess it all could be done much better today though. :)

Something on the go: Etrian Odyssey 1, 2 and 3 for the NDS. The gist of the game is that you're a party of people who're supposed to map out the surrounding forests/dungeons for the people in the main city. It's pretty fun, but you'll either find it too easy or too difficult because there's no difficulty setting or whatever.

Also the battles are more RPG style battles with random encounters, but eh I'd say it's one of the few handheld dungeon crawlers.

My favorite dungeon crawler is Chaos Strikes Back. Only DM comes close.

But one shouldn't play CSB without having played DM before... unless he/she wants a very hardcore experience. :D

Short answer, Dungeon Master on my Amiga.

Verbose bits...I bought the game and then saw on the back of the box that it wouldn't work because I didn't have enough memory in my Amiga. I left the box on the shelf above my monitor and pulled it down almost every day for a year and looked at that screen shot (an Atari ST screenshot, grrr) on the back, the one with the dungeon corridor, ornate door and treasures, etc on the floor... salivating like it was part of a spread in Hustler.

Oh how I daydreamed about what was down that corridor! For a year!

When I finally got the memory, some weird 8 meg board with about a meg in it, DM was all I played for a long long time. It somehow exceeded my expectations. It's funny how I still remember having to be pulled away from DM for other reason I can't remember.

Great times!

Chaos was awesome too. The way it started, basically kicking my butt and leaving my screaming, bloody pulp in a corner of the dungeon somewhere, was hilarious.

I'd take one of the four wooden clubs I was carrying and just bash open doors with it.
- if life were like Dungeon Master

I'd click FIREBALL much more on New Year's Eve
- if life were like Eye of the Beholder

Amiga never got EOB 3 to my knowledge. By the time I got it on PC it was a bit dated and I never finished it, just because I had so much else. A modern version of a well animated beholder would be pants wettingly fun. would be a great next game for these folks. I'm just assuming this game is more like Dungeon Master, what with those nifty (though for me slightly disturbing, the one with the smaller srooms on the top) mushroom beasties we're seeing.
