I... Huh... I never understood this. Why do people not like steam? Installing any game you own is as easy as finding the game in the list, and clicking install... And uninstalling is just as easy, and it lists every game you own.
I like to have control over updates. Once an update comes out, Steam will not let you play the game until you install it. That means if there is a change to a game that you don't like, or a balance change when you are already halfway through a game using the previous balance, or a change that breaks a mod, if you have the Steam version you are literally locked out of playing the original game. There is no way around it.
Not to mention you'll sometimes have a forced 8 or 10 GB update, and if you have slow internet you can't play your own game like you planned.
That's why I bought Grimrock and Grimrock 2 day 1 from the official website. Developers who offer a DRM free version will always have my full support, instead of waiting for a sale.

I so hate steam. Also browing on the site or client is a real bitch. I hope they go broke.

Hey now, I actually LOVE this feature. Because it's another form of protection to protect your account from hackers. They can't just crack your username and password, they also have to crack your email, email password, and get on your email and get the code. All without alerting you once, as then you'll instantly change all the passwords. This feature is awesome.

Now that isn't nice. No matter how much you hate it Steam is THE best platform for gaming, and the biggest leader towards digital gaming. GoG.com and other sites are copying from steam. So hate it, but don't hope they go broke and vanish, because then PC gaming will go to fuck.
PS. think of this. Without Steam, I bet LoG 1 wouldn't have sold even 1/3rd of what it has so far, and LoG 2 would have sold event less than LoG 1. Steam sells a LOT of games, a game on Steam, especially the front page, will sell more than if it's just on GoG, or their own site.
Hate it all you want, but don't wish it wasn't here because it helps the gaming industry. It works, even if a little 'bumpy'.

To be fair, if companies didn't force users to have a Steam account to play their games, you wouldn't have to worry about anyone 'hacking' your game collection. Similarly, if Valve didn't have the power to shut down your entire game collection in the blink of an eye, then it wouldn't matter whether someone with another IP or hardware configuration was accessing your account. It's kind of like having DRM for your DRM. At this rate, I imagine in the future you'll need social security numbers to access the retinal scanners that are required to prove you're actually a human so you can legitimately connect to a remote computer that streams your video game to you. Because it's much more convenient than just installing a game on your PC, of course.

Jirodyne wrote:So again, how is Steam Outdated? I mean, if you really absolutely hated it, you could just... you know.. Do research into games? What does Steam do wrong?
Last time I used steam was about a year ago, so I am not up to date on the latest changes, but back then, it still ran on the old infrastructure it launched with. It simply wasn't able to handle a 1000+ game store. If you didn't know what you're looking for, you wouldn't find it. It was also a huge resource hog. I've seen better. Surely I can compare to better systems on handheld devices and consoles because if you tell me to research games, I'll tell you to research ALL games, especially the systems they run on.
But the main thing Steam does wrong, for me, personally, is that it has absolutely no added value to me as a gamer. I currently only play Grimrock 2 and Guild Wars 2. I only buy games on HumbleBundle because I like charity. Steam is irrelevant. It is baggage. There's no reason for me, personally, to have it at all.
I need to reiterate this: I personally don't like steam. Go for it, but I'm happy that I'm not forced to. I'm just as happy that you're allowed to integrate LoG2 into steam. Can we both be happy for each other with the way we (don't) use steam?

I object to this attitude just as much as I object to steam-only people who insult me for wanting DRM free. Steam gives a service wanted by some of your fellow gamers.
As is clear from this thread, the stuff you dislike is something that other gamers love.

I really like Steam. I also really hate it.
I like that it makes finding great sales easy, playing with friends easy, and many other things easy. It's also nice having all my games in one place.
Somewhat contradictorily, I hate that Steam always wants all my games in the same directory and makes installing them anywhere else troublesome.
The biggest beef I have with Steam is that I have to be logged on to play - doesn't matter if there is offline mode, I still have to have Steam open - and I simply hate having to open any sort of 3rd-party application to play a game that should by all rights run just fine on its own. This applies to all 3rd party DRM-ish software, and as far as they go, Steam at least does have an offline mode (Windows Live, anyone?).
In sum, I think it's awesome that AH gives everyone the option to choose for themselves what they wish to use, and Steam sucks, but is neat at the same time.

Huh? You can configure as many installation locations as you want. I have my Steam games installed on several different drives.

Yes, I know, but it is more difficult to do than with non-Steam games, at least it was last I checked (about a year ago). But seriously, of all my points, that was not the most important, and wasn't really a point so much as a personal opinion.

Due to recent
beta 2.1.18 troubles... Thanks AH! As my DRM-free gog.com installer version allows me to do
version roll-back and has no Steam-like update enforcement.

Once again, I'm glad I can install LoG2 w/o third-party software:
