Hi there.
For some reason I enjoyed EoB I more then EoB II - probably it felt "more basic" and was still tricking my mind. I played like a dozen times; and EoB II I "only" play like 8 or 9 times.
What I did not like about EoB II, was that you really had some serious trouble with the skeletal warriors and especially with the the giant ants and gargoyles lvls, in which you were not able to rest due to nightmare issues - all that is, if you play with a new party. If you import the EoB I party with all the cool stuff and the tons and tons of magical wands and rods and whatnot, you literally had no trouble running through the game at all.
I admit, though, that some of the riddles and "connections" within EoB II were a lot more intense, entertaining and especially frustrating (Frost Giants or the two Beholder-levels for example).
Anyway: I like playing both games. And for some reason I don't recollect anymore I enjoyed playing these two parts a lot more then the third or any other "similar" game of the time.
I am very sorry that I never actually got into Land of Lore; that slipped my grip, and I don't know why. Probably, because it was not "AD&D 2nd Ed" anymore - my favorite Pen& Paper RPG back then (and still today).
All the best!
Liam

At the end of my first time with "the Legend of Grimrock" - played on default-party, hard, old-school mode:
