A very good and welcome submission, Yig. I'm added it to the OP.

A question to everyone:
for intro music what software do you use and with which success ?

So far I tried:
  • MuseScore => free, not too difficult to learn, lame sounding, extremely difficult to get drums right, usability below the recompile-your-kernel-level
  • FL Studio demo => sounds fine, seems to be very unintuitive to use
  • Garageband => not yet tested, trying it later today
Any suggestions ? What are your experiences with this kind of problems ?

Consider I am/was a bass guitar player, with some theory about music but not too much (know scales, modes, how to read notes etc.)

I do not know music very well, my approach is very similar to the approach I have used when I started modding games a few years back, tutorials about softwares and trial and errors, lots of errors...
So with your musician knowledge, even basic, you have a head start.

The only software I know of among your list is MuseScore and I have read it is a very good software.
Try to use alternate sound fonts with this software. With a proper and quality sound font you will have a better sound.
Check this page on the MuseScore site, if you haven't already : http://musescore.org/en/handbook/soundfont
And if you want proper example of tabling using drums try to get some from a video game music site like http://www.vgmusic.com/.
Final Fantasy music or other RPG game music make some nice example.

I've only ever used real life instruments and FL Studio.
My track "Gone" was made using the SAWER synth.

I'm using Cubase 6.5 along with Native Instrument's Komplete 8 and Steinberg's Absolute VST Collection, I'm afraid they don't come cheap though...
I didn't have time to go on Holiday this year so I decided to spend the money on audio software ;)

Thanks everyone!
I will investigate alternate soundfonts on MuseScore. If I'm not able to reach a satisfying result I'll probably do the melody in MuseScore and then import in some way in FL Studio to do the drums and distorted instruments (the default MuseScore electric guitar is the most awful sound ever  )

Sorry guys, just a quick simple question -
I have downloaded the samples (which are truly great!!) converted them to ogg files....
Now, where do I place the files and how do I set it up so the editor recognizes them???

You can place them anywhere in your dungeon's directory (create Music direcrory or drop them wherever you like). Then, in dungeon editor, right click on level's name, choose Properties\Background Musyc\Custom and specify the path there.
