Legend of Grimrock DAT File Extractor
Re: Legend of Grimrock DAT File Extractor
Is there a working version for the beta of an extractor yet, as I would like to be able to check out the scripts for some of the items like "wooden_box"

Re: Legend of Grimrock DAT File Extractor
I have a question on this: when a sound isn't contained in the official asset pack but can be accessed by script (e.g. a sound with playSound()), we can still use that in our custom dungeons, right? Since we're not distributing the sound itself.petri wrote:Please note that we are going to release an official asset pack soon. You may only modify and distribute assets that are contained in the asset pack.

Yes, that's the case. You just can't distribute the actual sound file or any altered version of it.

Then it would be very nice to have a list of all filenames (with folders) that are contained in the original dat file for referencing
Re: Legend of Grimrock DAT File Extractor
many (most? all?) of them can be found on the links from the modding page under Custom Assets:

Or maybe you are looking for something different?

Re: Legend of Grimrock DAT File Extractor
Well the portrait pictures files (I know there's a thread somewhere how to access them) and many of the model files and textures (e.g. for monsters, dungeon decorations and particles) are not in those lists. I'm not complaining about something specific but maybe there's something in that list that I could use but I just don't know yet

Re: Legend of Grimrock DAT File Extractor
May I ask why you're interested in hacking the dat file? We have provided a way to extensively mod the game and released an asset pack with textures, models and many Lua scripts. If the idea is to do modding by hacking the dat file, those mods will easily be incompatible with any changes we make to the base game. Also distributing modified dat files is against our modding terms.
Re: Legend of Grimrock DAT File Extractor
Welcome to the real world petri You can call it "curiosity". Everybody want to see what is inside. Not everything is about modding, but many ppl want to simply see resources, listen sounds etc. For me it is only challenge to succesfully extract resources from unknown archive. I'm not modder, I'm not interrested in mods.
Re: Legend of Grimrock DAT File Extractor
I see. We have tried to do everything we can to make extractor tools unnecessary by releasing everything but the actual source code of the game. We should have the right to choose what to release and whether to keep the code open or closed. Extractor tools are making it hard for us to have this choice.
There is probably nothing I can do to help you understand how I feel about this. The bottom line is that I don't want to be worried about this, so that's why I'm politely asking you to not post about your findings on this forum. That way at least it's not something that catches my eye so easily and I can sleep better. Hope you understand!
