PerfCap Reason appears on the screen now. Running test, waiting for problem to happen.

The fact that the problem is not happening now (daytime at the office) probably means one of a few things:

- The fact that GPU-Z is now successfully monitoring the PerfCap flag ... is heisenberging the situation and preventing the GPU from perfcapping for some reason.
- The fact that the laptop is currently connected to the company network instead of the home network is a factor.
- The fact that the laptop is currently connected via ethernet rather than WiFi is factor.
- The time of day is somehow a factor.

Curiouser and curiouser. I'll try it again at home tonight.

Very unlikely. The Perfcap sensor always shows some kind of value when a 3D application is active.
Could be Power, Utilization, Temperature, several voltages or a combo of those.

If your laptop is running on DHCP the network should not matter. Now WiFI is another thing. Try with ethernet when at home.

This would resort to some schedule again which you already eliminated.

Okay, I took the laptop home and started playing. I got the problem fairly quickly, it took less than 20 minutes of play to see the problem happen.

The problem is definitely a PerfCap on the Nvidia card. What GPU-Z said for the reason was "Util", aka reason #16 in the GPU-Z log file.

Some interesting things about this. First of all: It's also normal to see a dip and a perfcap at the moment I load up a saved game. But as soon as the load is done, it's back to normal performance. So I saw the perfcaps happen each time I loaded up a save, but they were very brief. I already knew this was the case and I could see the little tiny dips in GPU-Z when I loaded a savegame. That's not the problem. The problem is when I'm actively playing and moving around the world and THEN the perfcap happens for no reason.

In the log file below, the perfcap logged is shorter than most of the times it happens to me, but it's definitely The Problem.

One interesting thing that I'm seeing. At the instant before the perfcap happens, there's a brief moment where GPU Load and Memory Controller Load dips to zero for exactly one sample (the samples are at 1sec intervals).

I'm wondering if there's a bug in the Nvidia driver, where it needs to add a bit of hysteresis in detecting when the controller load drops...?

PerfCap 16 stands for utilization which means the gpu works as best as it can. That's absolutely fine. If you would see a different PerfCap value then the problem might be GPU related. Yet with the temperatures measured i don't see that.

Q:
- what did you do different now than before at work?
- did you check with ethernet instead of WiFi?

Is that really what the "16" value means?

My googling seems to indicate it means the opposite: The driver reduces the voltage to the GPU (and the GPU clock speed) when it detects that the GPU isn't needed, ie, to save battery life. If that's the case, then it would make sense that the brief "0" of GPU and Memory Controller Load values might be the precipitating factor.

Now I'm wondering if the driver power setting management of "Prefer Maximum Performance" isn't the setting I should have gone for. There was another setting "Prefer *consistent* performance". I'm going to give that one a shot. Hm.

And yes, the difference between being on Ethernet versus Wifi is weird, and doesn't make a lot of sense. I'll experiment to see whether I can induce and un-induce the situation by turning Wifi on and off.

Nope, selecting "Prefer Consistent Performance" did not solve the issue either, the problem still recurred after a while (though it seemed to take longer to occur, that could have been random chance).

My next step is to disconnect from the WiFi while playing and see if that solves the problem.

Man, I just can't figure this out. Disconnecting from both WiFi and Ethernet does not make the problem go away. Though being disconnected from WiFi seems to significantly reduce the frequency with which it occurs. I don't have solid statistics, but I played it for quite a while last night and this morning, and it seemed to me that the problem occurred several times while I was connected to WiFi, and it would only occur once per session when I was disconnected from Wifi. This could be coincidence though, the times that the problem occurs are random enough that I'd have to collect detailed statistics to be sure.

Time of day isn't a factor, as I've had the problem occur both morning and night.

I've also tried cycling through different settings in the Nvidia driver. Both the power management settings and the dual-display optimization settings. Neither seems to have any effect.

So, still stumped.

That is actually an important find! This hints towards a network config issue.

Yet being connected to ethernet only as you've been at work and being disconnected from both ethernet and wifi at home - as i understood you - are different situations. Please retry with ethernet connected at home. In case that's not possible please disable the network ports so windows does not attempt to access something that is not there.
