Do not think it so that you are "team leader"...
You need to think that you are all of them but as individuals when you fight.
You, as player, can be only single person of your group members. You can play game trough with single character (difficult) or as group of four.
There is no AI but you (as player) need to understand every character needs and skills as your own.
The group of four character is a small RPG game alone. You organize the position where you want them to stand as individuals, what you want them to carry as individuals and then on fight you need to take the role of every individual character as what you would do in their place.
The beauty of game isn't in graphics or in the story or even enemies, but in you how you play different characters separately.
There are RPG games what does same but as well implement the AI for other characters if player wants.
The amazing feature in this game would get lost if AI would start playing those characters.
As then many would whine why doesn't AI attack enemy with weapons in their hands automatically when they are capable of?
Why doesn't magic be bindable to single buttons or why don't we get lists from where to choose and place on hands...
Grimrock is awesome because it follows so well the original game what followed the vision that player own imagination creates the experience, not just follow it like a movie forces audience just to sit back and watch.
Same reason is why CoD is so terrible FPS shooter because you are forced to sit back and play without anykind imagination (what example SS2 and HL made differently).
Yes they could make the runes bigger but then you need to move more the mouse.
My opinion and feeling is that I love the rune setup as it is.
