How do you mean? The engine [like like plenty of other resource intensive engines] is fully 3D with dynamic lighting; the fact that they mimic the [grid based] gameplay experience of Dungeon Master and other crawlers, has no affect on the cost of the effects; it would still require decent hardware to run effectively.

Actually, graphics is something this game got a lot of buzz for.
At least within my own social circles.

I don't mean any insult to the game or graphics, as I said I am enjoying the heck out of the game.
I should point out I don't have much technical knowledge of computers, so perhaps Isaac you are correct about mimicking the old style grid base games is leading to a false sense of simplicity.
I know from experience my wimpy little computer can play games like Everquest 2, World of Warcraft, Fable, Torchlight and a few others with out problems (on low settings), and in comparison it would seem (again I'm not knowledgeable on this stuff) that there is not as much ...intensity? in Grimrock.
I apologize if I offended anyone with my statement.

I play at 1920x1200 and had zero problems with clicking runes. Hell, I even did a speedrun, which I have to click as fast as possible and had no problems with it.

Look at this image from Legend of Grimrock. Notice the high resolution of textures and the details on the ogre and the environment. Add to that realisting lighting that dynamically casts shadows. This stuff doesn't come cheap.
Now compare that environment and character to this troll from World of WarCraft.
I'm not saying LoG has the ultimate performing engine or that World of WarCraft is a bad game, but I think it's fair to say there's a big difference in the technical quality of the graphics between the games. The ogre's hands alone probably have more polygons and texture size than the whole troll.

Thanks for the examples Ixnatifual, they are pretty enlightening as to what causes the heavy load on the computer.
I thought all the background stuff would be the resource hog, like trees, houses etc, but it is not I see now.

Big, sprawling environments do cost to render, but it's pretty cheap with WoW's simplistic graphics. If you look at a title like Skyrim - it has somewhat similar texture and model quality to Grimrock, but has big, open environments. It looks incredible, but it's also more hardware intensive as a result.

But isn't this rather akin to annoyed players that don't like driving games, and have issue with Need4Speed? What you've pointed out as a peeve is integral to the dungeon crawler genre; not something that should be changed. The PC's are not supposed to auto-handle tasks, that's for the player to manage ~via fast clicking on tiny GUI elements.
Granted... It would be nice to have a (probably terribly complicated) percentile slider for custom sizing the UI to suit... or a selection of three complete GUI assets for use with certain screen sizes.; but they are not actively working on core features of LoG anymore
; not now that they have a split codebase.
