Once I was able to start at all (in windowed mode) I was able then to get at the Options menu and change to Maximized. Once that was set, everything worked fine. Started and plays properly Maximized.

Could somebody who has this problem tell me what resolution does the config file have when the game fails to auto detect the resolution? I.e. if you delete/remove the config file in the "Documents\Almost Human\Legend of Grimrock" folder, the game will attempt to auto detect the resolution and for some systems this seems to get the wrong resolution which causes the CreateDevice error. Also does the auto detected resolution relate in any way to your desktop size or anything else?

The information would help us in tracking the issue down.

Thank you very much for the patience and help in solving this issue!

for me it's 1280 x 1024, which is the same size as my desktop display resolution
my gpu is RADEON X1600 pro and i'm running winXPsp2

changing displaymode doesn't help neither :( and i was looking forward to try the game out already

edit: AHA! i found the problem of mine. it was firefox's plugin-container.exe in my case. i've already noticed before that the flash plugin in combination with plugin container sometimes causes direct3d applications fail to run

after i tried running dxdiag tool, it didn't even want to go into fullscreen mode with directdraw and direct3d test. so i closed all my browsers, ran the tests again-all went fine; then ran the game-went fine as well

so if anyone has these problems, try closing all of your web browsers or any other background applications using directx

I use my TV as the monitor, so my resolution is wonky, it autodetected to 1241x691, and my desktop size is 1862x1036.

I had the same issue until I changed the .cfg.
