Actually there are at least two hints, one at character creation and one in-game.
Create screen: the descriptions for throwing and missile skills only state "Attack Power" while all melee skills list "Accuray" too.
Ingame: when a character holds a throwing or missile weapon in hand below it "Accuracy" is listed as "--".
Since you find the first throwing weapons right on Level 1 at least the ingame hint should have told you that Dex is not needed for ranged rogues.
heh. i remember i got dungeon master on a friday night. i popped it into my amiga 500, picked the 4 characters that looked interesting to me and didn't stop playing until reaching level 9 with a weak and starving party (i think it was saturday evening. i didn't need sleep back then i guess). then i picked up the manual.
Yeah I remember when people use to play games because they were fun, a get away from reality.
I don't think I even read a game manual for anything other than the lore and pretty pictures.
Then I would put the game in whatever machine it was for, get it started, and just get lost in the game itself for days on in.
Oh the good old days of video games, when it was all new and exciting.

Not being a veteran Grimrock player, I didn't know "--" in accuracy meant automatic hit. In addition, the Missile weapons skill gave my rogue lots of Dexterity, further indicating its value to me as a primary stat for ranged weapons.
