I play EoB 3 on D-Fend Reloaded. Great and easy to use DosBox App.

Heh, shame it doesn't make the game any better ;D

I think this might be the third of fourth namecheck, but I can't recommend the Etrian Odyssey series highly enough.

I saw an updated version of Wizardry for the DS at the store the other day - I assume it's a shameless cash-in?

I started to replay EOB today... yea, that's how hooked I am now.^^

It is still a great game... we really need the feature to resurrect companions from found bones in LoG!

I have to admit. Gave EOB a go last night, and I'm so spoiled by LoG that I just didn't have the patience for it. =) The intro is still nice, though.

Just started on it and Lands of Lore is really good, runs really smoothly - much more so than EOB, combat and magic feels a bit more evolved and nuanced, it's pretty easy to get your head around the fast paced action and there's some satisfaction to be had in skillful play. Plot and all that is a bit cheesy and the voice acting is hit and miss but I kinda like it, adds character and warmth compared to other games. Shedding the D&D rules is definitely a good move, that's got me in high hopes for the leveling system for Grimrock, looking forward to seeing whatever unique system the team came up with. Finding secrets is good fun, shame you have got to try hard to avoid letting the automap give things away but so far areas have been the right size to explore on your own and only check back if you can't find where to go next.

Cheers for the recommendation guys - this is one game I would have definitely overlooked without prompting...

Glad you like it! Just finished it myself and YES it's a bit cheesier than I recalled it to be, but that's just some of its charm ;) Just remember to save often, new saves, because one of the levels is particularly unforgiving if you don't do things in the right order :P

Using DOSbox I found around 8500 cycles is perfect for running it smoothly. Stupid me played halfway through before I cranked them up from 3000...

Do not run Lands of lore over dosbox, it is not necessary, run it over scummvm, i consider it easier to run and smoother, a true pleasure. Framerate is great with no tweaks or configs. Elvira I and II are compatible too

If you want a customisable DM clone, try DSB (Dungeon Strikes Back). It's a Lua powered clone and offers quite a lot of scope for customisation as you can write your own functions to create new gameplay. It only runs in old-school resolutions (max 640 x 480), but if that doesn't bother you and you want to mess around with an old-school sprite based engine, then this is the one to play with.

You can add new graphics, sound, etc. I've been playing with it for a while and it's definitely powerful.

There's a forum for it at our Dungeon Master forums: (disclosure: I'm a mod and admin over there, we've been running it over 12 years!)

Someone else also mentioned Return to Chaos, which also offers a lot of customisation and the ability to create new dungeons, graphics, sounds. It has a few bugs and is no longer being developed, but it's complete enough for creating new adventures. We have forums for that too, plus LOADS of custom dungeons made by members of our community. Some of them are excellent :)
