Interface needs hotkeys. I can't fathom how they were not implemented in the game.

I actually like the current system, there is nothing wrong with it, and it's nice and simple, not complicated. It's just... Great.

Game balance and historical design. It's designed to be quite a bit like Dungeon Master in that respect, but the lack-of-hotkeys is pretty much intentional, I suspect.

here are a few more examples..notice the characters react to attacks, bleed, their portrait changes when they are poisoned / diseased / ect. These features are fun and add to the gaming experience. Having the character portrait box turn green when poisoned is boring. Once again this is just a suggestion to improve the game and I understand there is a small dev team.

also I never said this was top priority and if it's such a terrible idea then dont post in the thread and let it die instead of bumping it to 3 pages in less then 24 hours

Uh... I think a lot of people have COMPLETELY missed the point of the thread... lol. If you want a prime, awesome example of this, Wolfenstein 3D, his face looked progressively worse as he was damaged more. STILL A 2D PORTRAIT, it just changed during certain situations. And if you haven't played Wolfenstein 3D, SHAME on you!

I haven't missed the point of the thread. Personally, and this is just my preference. I like the standard 2D portraits as they are. I think that portraits where the characters become increasingly "beat up" belong in games that have somewhat of a sarcastic style. I really don't think it would suit Grimrocks seriousness at all. Maybe someone will create a mod that has beat up face portraits like this, or maybe a mod that would add in some vending machines that give you health potions in the form of soda cans.

I think the game has enough going on with the portraits already, with the poisoned, diseased, cooldown times halved, rage, shackled, requiring sustenance, overburdened, and the nearly overburdened. Having portraits that have different face animations on top of all this, it would just be too much. Especially if in later expansions there are more monsters with different abilities and new situations that implement new icon form de-buffs and buffs. It might even discourage them for adding many diverse monster abilities just because they would have to create different faces, and what happens if you're low health, poisoned, diseased, and have the rage buff. Are you some red faced, black eyed, scruffy haired, creature with sickly boils, puke coming out of your mouth and steam coming out of your ears.

See might and magic 4/5/6 for examples. Some of those faces your party got when they were stacked with status effects were just silly. :D

I don't really have an opinion one way or the other about this (I was bored enough this morning to read the entire thread...lol). I just wanted to make a point: I was in my 20s when Wolf 3D came out (and this was BBS days, pre-Internet...so the game was bought directly from the publisher), and I remember a couple of us guys huddling around a co-worker/friend's computer as he played it...all of us were slack-jawed. The graphics (including the avatar of Blaze taking damage), the voice samples, the tension, the storyline...all of it blew our minds. It may seem cartoonish now, but there was *nothing* sarcastic about that game when it was released. It was serious as a coffin. So much so, in fact, that the original game was pulled from shelves in Germany (due to the use of Nazi symbols and references).

I understand that this is 2012 (and I'm certainly not admonishing anyone, if that's how it sounds)...I just wanted to take you back to 1992 and show you all how amazing it was to experience the birth of a genre. :D

I can definitely agree with you, that back then it was different they way we saw our games. But that can be looked at, at more than just one dimension. If you look back at the 90's or 80's and think about how people dressed. During the time it was serious, or cool, or classy. Now its just laughable. I think bringing "beat up" face portraits into the game would just be 100% anachronistic, is basically what I'm trying to say.
But yeah, I can still look back and appreciate the genres. Good times.
