Keys and what they are used for-
Required to complete the game-
Ornate-
4 total, needed for last area. Each is found on one of the 4 goromorgs.
Blue Gem-
There are 2, needed on level 3. One is found in
the southwest level 4 area (accessible early on) and the other after the pit puzzle on level 3.
Round and iron keys
are needed to proceed as you go and generally found near where they are used with the exception on a iron key needed to open the south door in the northwestern section of level 4. This key is found
past a puzzle marked "get a running start".
Not required to win the game-
Brass-
There are 2, both used to enter the treasure chambers. One is found with
a blue gem in southwest level 4 and the other near the entry to the poison halls on level 4.
Gold-
5 total, used to choose rewards in treasure chambers. Often found in secrets.
Prison-
Only one, used to open either the prison on level 6 or the undead army reserve.

In the SW area of L4 is a room with 2 crabs. How do I get in, or remove the portculli?

When you look closely you can see a gate/door on the other side of the room. That's the way inside.

In the SW of L4... is there a way to keep the secret door (the area where the Dismantler sword is found) permanently open? The Demon head down the passage wants to shoot a lightning bolt into the receptor, and I assume it's for a reason. Thanx!

Aye the demon head shoots for a reason but obviously you did not discover yet what reason this is or how this door is opened at all. In that case my answer won't help you a lot.
You can hold that door open .. if you feel the urge of being permanently electrocuted.
Phitt had a similar question earlier:
Phitt wrote:I understand that the wall getting hit by the lighting bolt is a secret wall, but again, no clue how to open it. The blob receptor does nothing, the lightning spells do nothing, I tried with torches in the holder(s) and without, I looked for secret buttons.
My answer was: right now everything you can do there has been done. To do more you have to find another way in.
This still holds.
Too cryptic?
K, let me tell you this: most doors in the pyramid are passable both ways as usual. This one does not belong to them.

Can you be more helpful? I am currently clueless about:
1. L4 center pits
2. L3 center pit puzzle (killed the goromorg)
3. I have no idea where the "get a running start" puzzle is
4. L4 SW area... the wall that blocks the lightning receptor. I have the "Dismantler" sword, so I know how to open the wall from that side, But the pressure plate won't stay depressed.
5. L4 crab room... no idea how to get to that door.
Do I need to start doing random pit dives??? I've already been doing that, but it hasn't been a "policy".

Me thinks I already answered that ..
To hold this pressure plate down (and with it the secret door open) your party has to stay put on it.
Anyway why do you want to keep it open? Once you got the Dismantler there is nothing else to do.

Random? No. Precision. To complete the L3 pit puzzle you very likly have been down in the L4 center so it's all on your map.
In the rare case that you have not been to the L4 center yet take a close look at which pit of the 4x4 grid you hop in and were you arrive. Then all you have to do is reach and follow each corridor.

As the name of this puzzle suggests, timing is of the essence.
Stand on the pressure plate, throw something down the hall and check out what happens.

I can get across the pit by throwing into the teleporter. I stand on the pressure plate and hear the door open and then immediately shut. By moving into the teleporter... it ports me to the open pit where I fall,,, NOT to the passage that has the door. What should I try next?
