There are two ways to edit the monster's material:
First, you can redefine the material (Usually you just make a new material with the same name as the monster).
So if I understand correctly, as long as the material's name is the same as the new monster's name it will automatically pick it up. Is that correct?
Technically often, but it's not cause and effect. They just named the materials for the monsters after the monsters.

The material names could be arbitrary (and will vary as people make new monsters and items). The material must exist, and the material name (as typed, and case sensitive) must exist in the model file if you want to have a new material that does not override the default for the whole dungeon. If you just want to make all spiders have a Black Widow pattern, then you need only redefine the default material for them ~and they named it 'spider'.

Here are the default material names for dungeon objects: http://www.grimrock.net/modding/predefi ... finitions/

The materials for monsters (that I have checked), have so far been the name of the monster as it appears in the editor.
*(except that all herders use the 'herder' texture. The way to find the monster materials is to open the model file and see what they are.)

Reviving a dead thread for a moment. Hopefully it gives it new life.

I would just like to say that anyone who does not know how to texture, it best off starting with slimes. They simply are the easiest thing to re-texture due to it's shape. There are no limbs to worry about, no clipping/obvious splits to worry about.
And best of all, you rarely need to play around with the specular and normal maps.
So I challenge all the modders out there who are afraid to get into texturing to start with slimes. Grab a copy of GIMP and the .dds plugin, create a 512x512 .dds image with whatever you like in it, and get some results.

The best way to gain confidence in something is to do it.

If you need some more personalized tips on getting started, just send me a PM.

Yea I was hesitant to get into texturing, but I gave it a go and it's nowhere near as tough as I thought (to do the basic things at least.)

On slimes, I notice the green slime is opaque, which seems strange to me. I know you can change to translucent, but what gave the green slime it's look that other opaque ones cannot seem to mimic.

It's mostly because the green_slime material is able to use a shadetex image that we are unable to use in the same manner.

Yup, when texturing slimes it is good to remember that shadetex thing. I was immensely perplexed when my slime turned yellowish when I tried to change something.

Also, it is a good way to experiment on many other things, slimes are, well, fluid by design. They take particles and lighting effects rather well and can help understand them even with zero experience like I had when I made the Molt.

Neikun, I've yet to see a transparent Slime. Is it doable? I'd fancy seeing some skull inside it :D

Entirely possible. I was playing with the thought of making small bubble particle effect inside such a slime, but I never got around it. A skull, as in a 3d model skull could be more challenging, but I figure someone knows how it's done.

junk inside a slime would be cool - weapons, gear, etc, that you can retrieve after dispatching it!

Yup, this is what I had in mind when I first started editing the slime:
http://zeldawiki.org/images/c/ce/Greenchuchu.png

I've also thought of making "slime essence" items for different colors of slime that could be combined into different potions, red for health, blue for mana, green for poison etc. Hm, now that I think of it, I have quite the load of ideas concerning slimes...

...Damned be that I've been stuck playing games instead of modifying them as of late. : /
