This would solve OP's problem.
But if the character dies underwater or in some other dangerous area, retrieving his dropped items might be challenging.

Seems the developers have changed their minds a bit, as the next patch will be addressing the case of dead characters receiving injuries. So if you suffer a foot injury, and then die, you'll have to lighten the corpse's load. But if they die, and then you fall down a pit, the dead character won't receive injuries.
