Most Light weapons are dex-based. That's means they'll hit far more often. Less damage yeah but shorter cooldowns. So I cant say they're rubbish. For a Dex based character you certainly wont take Heavy Weapons (all str based). So they have a purpose.

ironically many of the light weapons are also Str based. That is my issue right now with my Dex based Knight he is still using knives because every sword so far has been Str based.

One solution would be to make some light weapons get stat bonuses from both strength and dexterity

I used a light sword, dual daggers, the big axe, and a gun.
I found them all to have their uses.
Actually, I think the only attack type I didn't use extensively was missile.

Heavy is better than all the other weapon classes
however i recently made a dual wield light str rouge and it is great, especially with 5 crit.
i just wish firearms were better, they're pretty much trash atm. make them scale with accuracy or something.
maybe the alchemist could get recipes to craft more pellets? i dunno.

who cares? 900 damage takes out any normal creature, and takes a huge chunk out of any of bosses.
your other characters don't just sit around and wait for your 2h dude to recover, do they?
yeah, we've had this discussion before, and I've tried out both. it's good to have a mix, so you can keep hitting while your big hitter recovers, but sorry, when you can take out monsters with a single hit, preventing them from ever getting an attack in, that's brutally efficient.
unless you are absolutely perfect in swinging all those light weapons, you're wasting your precious dps anyway. most people will find that using heavy weaps and armor up front is the way to go. meteor hammer and bane, or ancient sword for anything sensitive to cold.
you can keep a light weapon character in the back row, and just give it a couple of levels of accuracy.
sorry, but that's simply the best setup for this game, hands down.

I would not say rubish, just missing some good light weapon based on STR, I am generally ok if dmg will be lower than with Heavy weapons, its quite logic.

In my last playthrough I had 2 front fighters.
Minotaur barb with head hunter, gave him an immense amount of strength potions, 50 strength in late game, using dual wielding.
And an insectoid barb, 31 strength, using heavy weapon.
Who do you think did more damage over the course of a fight? Hint, not the one with 19 more points in strength.

I'm curious as to how you're getting Bane to crit on every attack.

They also don't just sit around waiting for your dual-wielding dude to recover. What's your point?

Did you use backstabbing?

Now on my second playthrough and I am getting good damage from my strength based light weapon knight.
I also see how a straight dex based character could straight bee line to all the awesome dex weapons and be doing awesome damage for most of the entire game.
Sickle sword and bone blade are quite nice. Serpent is king if gained very early.
Bane and Meteor is a given for heavy and also in a places you might not be able to bee line straight to from the get go.
On hard those zombies are insane. and the spider swarm early... youch! (on hard mode that is) Of course everything can be successfully acquired.
However access to the light ones even the top dex based is doable very early on.
this yields a damage base over a longer period of time. which in my opinion is much greater than the shorter massive damage spike.
though I think this is all about how one plots their course and how they gain mastery over how to tweak the skill sets just right for consistent damage
