Yeah, huge PC game boxes stuffed with massive novella-esq manuals are sorely missed. However, they shall never return, due to the prevalance of the in-game tutorial and less obscure anti-piracy measures (anyone remember having to type in the first word on page 34, paragraph 11, line 6?). And of course, awesome stats are now relegated to strategy guides rather than manuals.

not quite my friend
the Combat mission series and quite a few flight sims etc,still have large extensive manuals printed in soft and hard cover,for the dedicated gamer ,thankfully :)

I also have to mention this:

Publishers... if you are only providing a digital manual, even if it is unneeded for most games, since it is digital there is no reason for it to be grayscale. There is no saving in printing costs with digital manuals :P

As for the rest of the topic. I wasn't actually expecting this many replies on a topic like this. Here is an idea, Patch Grimrock tutorial menu with one extra slide, saying: "Hey, how about actually reading the manual... it is called that for a reason you know."

I love those old RPG manuals! They had so much stuff in them. You could just read them for enjoyment. I remember the Ultima VII manual and how it read like a tourist guide to. It really made me itch to play the game!
