checkered room was not the problem. my first thought was going to chess, and than it was easy.
my greatest problem was the "halls of fire"-entrance. on the shelf next to the pit are lying two fire-bombs. so i threw one to the fireball-head, nothing happened.
and when i found the fire-sword, i didn'd know, that this is capable of shooting fireballs (my mage was specialized on earth and couldn't cast the fireball-spell).

Why was everyone having problems with the Checkered puzzle? I got it on the first try, didn't even have to think about it.

I don't know, but I do remember a similar puzzle in EoB II - in the area where you can't rest - that had me stuck for a while. But then again, that didn't give you any clues!

Nah, it just strikes you or it doesn't.

Checkered room made me instantly think of the game Checkers, where only every other square is used, so dropping something on half the plates was the first thing I tried. Of course I dropped them on the wrong half of plates.

you could have avoid that by thinking ;-P
the last plate before the gate has to be activatet, because of the party standing on it. and from there it's easy to solve.

That could've saved me some time. Then again, some plates are only triggered by items, not the party itself, while others are only triggered by the party.

It only took me like 10 seconds to move all the items around, so no problem. And the item on the 6th plate you can take with you.

Which means that you only need to leave a total of 15 items behind throughout the game to reach the endgame section. :)
