Not necessarily. They can call it a sequel if they like - and if they put in enough new content, justifiably so IMO.

But to be frank I don't care if they call it a sequel or an expansion. As long as we get more stuff, right?

It matters quite a lot to the modding community.

How come?

An expansion would add data to the current program, and allow existing mods to be used, as well as provide extra data for mods based upon the current version to be used.

A sequel is a new program with a new database, and thus would require separate mods. Existing mods wouldn't work on the sequel, and mods designed for the sequel can't use anything from the original game.

There is really no point in making a sequel if you can accomplish the same with relatively the same amount of effort in an expansion.

I've played a couple of "sequel's" in my time where the mods for the previous game's have worked, some with issues but nothing game breaking..

Imo, a sequel (for a game) is simply a game that follows, continue's or prequel's the game that came before it and also being independently installed and played.
If it is installed on top of another game then it is an expansion.

That being said, a sequel can be built using the same engine as It's predecessor which should allow most mods to work, if not because of small improvements to data, then it should require very little to get them to work.

What if a mod would for example use the chitin armor graphics, and the sequel wouldn't include the chitin armor set? Then the mod wouldn't work with the sequel.

Expansions would be easier for the mods, as a single mod could use data from both the original game and the expansion.

couldnt the modder add the removed chitin armor graphics to his/her mod?

sorry, i re-read and i sound negative.. i do see your point and its a very valid one to be sure, I'm just saying, it has been and probably will be done again

1) If the mod was designed before the sequel arrived, the modder had no reason to do so.

2) It would needlessly increase the size of the mod. What if the mod would include most monsters and wallsets in the game, would it have to include all that data into the mod?

3) AH already said they didn't like people including original data in their mods, so we couldn't include the chitin armor graphics directly into the mod.

No offense taken. I'm just explaining that an Expansion would make stuff a lot easier on the mods, as you'd have one game that was getting richer with data, rather than having a Sequel and modders had to pick between making their mod for the original or the sequel.

I see your point as well. That being said - whatever is necessary to make the best continuation of Grimrock, if they choose to continue it, that's what I hope they do. Whether it's an expansion or not. Because whatever's going to be best - that's the game I want to mod for.
