... recently I found that a character shares experience from a killed monster ONLY if he hit him during a fight.
Now I give throwable weapons to mages (they always hit), and when I don't cast spells during a fight I use those ranged attacks. This way my mage grows as fast as the other party members

That's a great strategy to keep your mages leveling with the other characters.
Technically you do get half experience without participating, or full experience if you hit the monster at least once.
