Actually I'm not certain they need to be 24 bit, I've imported 32 bit myself, and I believe 16 bit works as well. :)

32 bit would have an alpha channel, which I don't think is supported, haven't tried it. 16-bit has crappy colouring. So 24-bit is best option :-)
