You should also play Ultima Underworld, which is freakin great and aged really well.

I kind of thought I was going to do this anyway, but now I'm sure I'll be replaying DM (all of them), and EOTB1, EOTB2
Still awesome games, as long as you can put up with their limitations. They also all (IIRC) lack ingame maps - so it's time to get out the grid paper and dust off those mapping skills

I'd second the recommendations for
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (Roguelike) and Eye of the Beholder (Crawler) respectively.
Since I'm here, I've also got to recommend the Etrian Odyssey Series on the Nintendo DS. Not old, but they've been keeping the Dungeon Crawler candle burning for me.

Wanna say thanks again for all the replies!
One thing I love about indie games is the community is always so much nicer and more helpful than the crowd you get around big name games. (at least in my experience)

might and magic games were great. if you start on part 6 youll be fine. Its a fantastic series! I also reccomend old ultima underworld

I haven't played half of the games listed, so I sure have some catching up to do. I played Lands of Lore, and enjoyed it. Anvil of Dawn was pretty cool too, but for some bizarre unknown reason I just got tired and stopped...
One I don't think anyone has mentioned yet is Stonekeep, I really liked that game. Grid based, real time combat, creepy atmosphere, funny/weird characters.
There's also Captive for Atari ST / Amiga. Problem is I found it a pain in the butt to find an emulator and get it working... I think I did play Dungeon Master when I was little, but just for a few minutes (yet enough to have it printed into my memory
), I guess I should start with that one.

Sadly, I doubt I could get my Amigas to run anymore (they're 20ish years old now), so I have probably lost access to my copies of DM and CSB. I had DM2 for Sega CD and also Mac, and obviously neither of those is playable now either.
So yeah. I guess I gotta start over.

If you never played the classics I recomend:
-Try Anvil of Dawn it is a good beggining in the genre. Very polished and relatively user friendly for modern standards
-Play one of the first two Eye of the Beholder in the AGA Amiga version because of the automaps, then you could try a DOS version to map yourself.
-Dungeon Master, oldie, the classic. Dungeon Master 2 has automap but it is not as good.
-I can recomend Black Crypt too. What an elaborate interface for a game of that time...
