The compass shows the north is at the bottom of the automap - http://steamcommunity.com/id/grinderX19 ... 3584723846
Isn't it stupid?.. Was the puzzle referencing wrong directions intentionally?

No, no it doesn't. The compass will continue to work properly as it always has, no matter how many people get confused over it. (By "properly" I mean "similar to a real compass".)

Just to make things crystal clear :)

1) There's no need to light 3 torches. 2 will do
2) There's no need to stand on 2 different positions. 1 will do
3) Any perk that enables you to shoot 2 arrows/throw 2 stones etc at the same time will work

Here's a short video to clarify things: http://pheryllt.de/_MISC/LOG_bugtest2 (allow some time for buffering)

No, no it doesn't.
Let me put this straight.
SpoilerShow
1. black arrow (not red) means north
2. as you can see from my screenshot, compass says "north ahead" when I look in the direction of the door
Image
3. to open the door you actually need to throw rocks south and west (if compass is working properly)
Correct me if I missed something.

You are facing south, and the compass, from all I can tell, shows that north is behind you.

EDIT: Gah, I missed this:

So, it's all based on a misunderstanding. Why would you assume black is north? I thought it was red.

There seem to be some major misunderstandings about the correct use of a compass.
I'll try to clarify things a bit.

1) The RED part of the compass needle ALWAYS points north. If it doesn't, it's broken or from a child's magazine.
2) That means, for example, if the red needle points LEFT, the north is on your left side, meaning you are looking EAST.
3) When you open your automap, look at the blue arrow. NORTH is ALWAYS WHERE THE TOP OF YOUR SCREEN IS!
4) If you're playing on old-school mode, I suggest you invest 5 minutes in playing a game with the automap. Advance to the point where you find the compass, open automap, and check the bearing of the compass against the automap marker, so you can get a feeling about how the compass actually works.

Hope I could help,
PSY

That's not possible. You're facing south and west. Maybe you already opened the gate earlier while tossing around stuff, and you didn't realize it.
If you provide a savegame, I'll make a video using your savegame.
