Other download portals offer the same convenience of never having disks again, but without the downsides of steam (frontend and DRM). Case in point: GOG.

I prefer to have my games on steam.

As much as I prefer games to be on Steam, if it's a great game I don't care where I purchase it from.

Steam is a very good choice! Also, you guys should really consider GOG.com, all games sold there are DRM free and they have a really nice business model.

Very heartening to hear! I'm looking forward to a non-Steam version.
