Either it is a clone who vanishes after 1 or 2 hits, or it is the shield guy with an endless shield. I did'nt recognize, that the shield disappears after enough hitting, be it only for a small amount of time.
I can't say what the conditions are to trigger the island master into cloning himself or raise/refresh his shield. I've seen him do both rather early and also rather late in the battle. The clones will never have shields, they are just decoys to distract the player. The shield spell he uses absorbs a limited amount of damage (200-300 i think) and once you managed to beat thru it he can recast it at any time so when his shield falls hit him fast and hard!

A pretty good way to keep track of the island master even inside his pack of clones is poison bolt. Once poisoned his shield will absorb any damage of the spell but it will constantly blink as long as the poison stays and give away that he is the one to concentrate on.

I still haven't beat the Island Master, but I'm coming close to it, and I have some ideas about it. Some of which contradict things that were already said in this thread...

Elsewhere in the thread it says that you should wait a bit and let the Trickster open up the smaller rooms, and then try to trap the Island Master in those small rooms. I don't like this strategy because the darn clouds of insects, which are released from the smaller rooms, hurt me far too much. I always lose immediately when I try this strategy.

I think the best way to kill him is this:
- Kill the Trickster as quickly as possible, before he opens up the smaller rooms with the insect clouds.
- If the trickster does the thing that triggers the teleporting fireballs, jump into a spike pit and climb up to the top of the ladder in the spike pit, but do not step off the ladder until the fireballs are finished running. This avoids both the fireballs and the spikes in the pit simultaneously.
- When the Trickster's health is low, try to do any necessary recharging and healing right before you deliver the coup de grâce on him.
- Be ready so that when you finally kill the Trickster, you can start hammering the Island Master immediately, as he's transforming.
- Once the Trickster transforms into the Island Master, do not let him out of your sight. Keep hammering the heck out of him, and if he raises his shield, don't flee, keep hammering the shield.
- Letting the Master make clones is death. If you keep the Master occupied and moving, he won't make any clones. Don't let him.
- If you get to a point where he starts making clones and you've lost track of him, you're toast, reload your save game. Once the map is full of clones, I can't get close enough to him to be effective for any length of time. Fighting through all the clones to reach him is fruitless.

Insects should be one hit wonders at that stage, they need accuracy so maybe you don't have a character with accuracy (use special attack on trident if you need accuracy) (or fireburst or something).

It is probably more fun to tank like you say, but not easier at all. You just wait for trickster to open a room, go in and wait for him, seal the room with a force field and hit him and then island master a few times with scythe/bane specials. The clones are also one hit wonders.

I just ate the fireballs and healed the second time, but the first time I just put a force field in front of the fireballs.

Assuming you have a weapon special that can hit decently and a wizard with points in concentration you can trivialize this fight.
SpoilerShow
1) run straight up to him and use your wizard to cast force shield (the box spell).
2) Prepare the spell again and activate your weapon special (hold down the right mouse button, but don't let go).
3) As soon as the shield goes down, hit him with your weapon. He will knock you back one square.
4) Walk forward and put him back in the box. Then drink a mana potion and any health pots for your mage and weapon user if necessary and repeat. I needed around 10 mana potions and something like 15 rounds of this.

If you have enough damage output, you will get 1-2 hits on him before he reapplies his shield (the staff stomp animation). He will never produce a clone. It took my minotaur about 5-6 hits to kill him. Having full points in concentration (as I had) actually makes this take longer than it needs to as the force shield spell takes forever to go down. This also means he will reapply his shield more often.
