I just started with a solo farmer but I'm wondering... did you guys play on "Hard"? Because once I got to the viper roots... damn... they reduce my HP by about 1/3 every time they hit me. And I find dodging all of their attacks pretty impossible considering how fast they are. Only managed to reduce their health bar by maybe 1/8 before I died...

I have only played Grimrock 2 on hard. You really shouldn't ever be getting hit by viper roots. There is an entire second between when their rising animation/sound starts and when they actually do damage. It should be easy to dodge it on reaction, just move when you hear the sound (buffer two moves for a pseudo-option select in case your first choice of direction is blocked by the rising root).

Well, if he's finding it virtually impossible, then telling him it should be easy isn't really all the helpful, at least that's how I see it. 8-) Viper Roots is quite near the beginning, so I would suggest playing on easier difficulty if you're really going to give single farmer a go. :)

@ minmay

First of all, there are two of those roots. And it happens quite frequently that when you dodge one, you run onto a field that will be attacked by the second root that appears off screen. Speaking of which - it also happens quite often that they appear behind or next to you and just be the sound, I find it difficult to tell where and how far away they appear.
Would this game have an isometric instead of first person perspective, it would be easy to dodge, yes...

@ Komag

I thought so too but I'm afraid that the rest of the game might be too easy on Normal. Because I think I found the viper roots also to be one of the toughest battles even with a four member party.

Key strategy: eat to level up!

I did my solo farmer run for the sake of having it done after several other solo class runs. When he tackled the viper roots he was already level 5. There it helps to fight only in the center of the arena so you don't get cornered plus keep your back against one of the two large rocks there. The rest is just evading/sidesteping and then whacking/shooting their sides or backs.
