Weapon and armour choices

Post by FennerMachine »

I have a few opinion questions, so no right/wrong answers.

What do you prefer and why:
1: Throwing or missile weapons?
2: Armour set bonus and shield with heavy weapons or dual wield no shield with light weapons?
3: Rogue amour or Mirror armour? (Or other cloth/light armours if you prefer another).

I know you can have combinations of these and other set ups with 4 party members so don't have to choose for the actual game, so what combination would you have, without going into exact character build details?

Example:
3 Barbarians with heavy weapons, Crystal & Meteor sets, Mirror armour & shield, 1 farmer caster/potion brewer Archmage set.

1. throwing (much better DPS)
2. light weapons (much better DPS)
3. doesn't make a noticeable difference

I dont care much for Armor due to the inconsistency in effectiveness between the 2 games: 1) in the first Grimrock, Protection meant very little and Evasion meant everything; 2) in the second Grimrock game, Protection meant everything and Evasion was virtually irrelevant.

My party can run around butt fk'in nekid for all I care.

Weapons? I prefer Heavy as long as the Scythe is in the game. With enough points in Heavy Weapon skill, I would continue to pair the Scythe up a Shield that gives +Resists.

Light weapon with strength or dexterity?

I played with 1 strength heavy and 1 dual wield strength light weapons, and my heavy was so much stronger. Sure slow on the swing but it was worth it since I got 600+ dmg crit relevantly often, and with light weapons ~40 a swing

with equal str/dex the DPS is about the same (actually favours dex weapons somewhat) but str is much easier to increase than dex because of potions of rage, and it also affects bear form damage, so str ends up being a lot better

heavy weapons DPS is like 1/4 light weapons lol, unless you are just ignoring backstabbing i guess

I think "on paper" Light Weapons have better DPS, but when you're actually fighting in the game, heavy weapons (Bane/Scythe) simply feel much more effective.

I wonder if someone has made a dps meter that calculates the hit and misses, the crits and average damage per second.

Yes. Certain enemies, such as the last boss, I would rather run in, hit a heavy weapon special attack, and retreat, instead of kiting infinitely with light weapons. It totally depends on your playing style, but it's easier to use heavy weapon special attacks to take advantage of a good moment to strike.

Plus, I'm bad at backstabbing.

'special attack' in LOG2 is difficult to remember as it wasn't there in LOG1 but when it is used it bleeds energy like nobodys business so has to be used rarely of course

also the ability to have 2 weapons : I or II is difficult to remember to take advantage of

it is good to have the sickle sword up front, that's a light weapon and the burning flail for minotaur is brilliant

In theory heavy weapons and light weapons can have the same dps like in 20 dmg/2 secs vs 10 dmg/1 sec. However the armor and protection of the enemy also plays a role. If that stops 8 dmg then heavy will have 12 dmg/2 secs vs light 2 dmg/1 sec making heavy more effective having +4 dps (12 / 2 - 2). If using a heavy weapon gives you an evasion decrease, you need to figure out what's best for your party.

I would love to see AH tell us how damage is calculated for both LoG1-2. It can be something like this:

random (low dmg, high dmg) + ( crit chance x crit modifier ) x strength or dexterity modifier - enemy dmg stopper ( armor + protection + evasion )

If we know exactly how, someone might be able to make a damage recorder and calculate dps.
