are you guys talking about the plate you can barely see far off and blocked by a gate? Trying to get to that too haha...cleared level 5 i think and i still havent been able to get it

I gave up, i cleared whole level 5, jumped into every pit and still cannot reach the stupid plate armor...
I will give it a try during next playthrough with an automap ...

Game Banshee couldn't find it either, the area with the plate is NOT mapped out in there walkthrough.

Well, my take is that there is a pit somewhere in "beast menagerie" that takes you to a fourth sub-dungeon linking into the main room with the teleporter. Somehow either opening all these sub-dungeons or a secret in the last one might open that gate. I think this would make sense seeing as all the other three puzzle areas have pits leading you to a level 5 sub-dungeon with access to the main teleport back.

But, I have of course combed the beast menagerie and I can't find anything.

The access is not from above, but from below. Try to search at level 6 in a "hot" room.

Gosh - must have missed this (but then I'm stuck on level 4 myself). Got the key and book but don't recall seeing any plate armor.

I think you get the plate at Lvl5 (=after completing lvl4 and descending to lvl5 via stairs), and it's just a taste of what is in store for you.
